That is the noodle shop of Mr. Quach Uy's family (81 years old), often affectionately called Uncle Suon by customers. The nameless shop, located on Le Van Sy Street (Phu Nhuan District), is filled with the childhood memories of many generations of Ho Chi Minh City residents.

3 generations of dedication

In the evening, I stopped by Uncle Suon’s noodle shop, where customers came and went regularly. The noodle shop was located peacefully on a corner of Le Van Sy Street, facing alley 137. Uncle Suon, with white hair, weak eyes, and his steps faltering due to old age, was still working hard at his old noodle cart, making hearty meals for customers.

Uncle Suon's noodle cart has been passed down through 3 generations.

The old man said that this job had been with him all his life, so he was very familiar with it. Pondering, he said that this noodle shop was opened by his parents before 1975. His grandparents were Chinese of Cantonese origin, came to Saigon to make a living and opened a restaurant selling the family's traditional noodle dish.

“Back then, there were many Chinese people in this area. If they weren’t doing business, they would grow cabbage and vegetables. When I was young, this was a deserted area with few houses, not as bustling as it is now. Thanks to the noodle shop, my parents had money to live and raise their children,” the 90-year-old man recalled his childhood.

Later, his father passed away, leaving his mother to inherit the noodle shop alone. After 1975, when he was over 30 years old, Uncle Suong and his mother sold the shop. Later, when he got married, he and his wife continued to maintain the restaurant opened by his parents. The old man smiled and said that he had only known this job all his life, because if he didn't sell noodles, he wouldn't know what else to do.

The bowl of noodles looks simple, but is rich in flavor.

Uncle Suong and his wife had no children. In 2003, his wife passed away, and he continued to sell noodles to make a living. Now, at this age, he left the noodle shop to his grandchildren, the children of his wife's siblings who run the business. However, Uncle Suong still goes to the shop every day to ease his longing for the shop and customers. When he is healthy, he works, and on tired days, he watches his grandchildren take over his business.

The restaurant specializes in Chinese noodles, with each serving ranging from 45,000 to 60,000 VND depending on the customer's needs. Looking at the continuous stream of customers coming in and out, I whispered to the old man: "How has our restaurant been able to retain customers for decades? Do you have any secret?"

Hearing that, Uncle Suong smiled and said that from the past until now, he has only followed the recipe passed down by his parents, and then continued to pass it on to his grandchildren. Perhaps because the cooking and seasoning methods are suitable for most diners, the restaurant is still loved and supported by customers until now, through the ups and downs and changes of the city.

A childhood sky

Being hungry, I ordered a portion of noodles for 50,000 VND. The traditional noodles were boiled in boiling water by Mr. Suon "perfectly", creating eye-catching golden noodles. The simple bowl of noodles with a little minced meat, sliced meat, pork rinds, chives, vegetables... was poured over a rich broth, making it extremely "appetizing".

Cozy restaurant space.

Personally, I give this Chinese noodle soup 8.5/10. I will definitely stop by to support it whenever I pass by, because the shop is open from 6am to 9pm every day.

Among the diners were Mr. Le Huu Hoang (36 years old, living in District 3) and his son. He confided that since he was a child, his father took him to this restaurant to eat, whenever he had to pass through Phu Nhuan District. The taste of noodles here has become the taste of his childhood.

“Back then, I still saw this noodle cart selling it. When I grew up, had a wife and children, I still saw this noodle cart and him. The noodles here are delicious, not only because the shop cooks them well, but also because they are part of my childhood memories with my father. Now I bring my son here, usually a few times a month," the customer confided.

Meanwhile, Ms. Nhung (53 years old) said that she has been eating at this restaurant for so long that she can't remember when, but she knows that over the years, the restaurant has kept the same address, unchanged. She often buys many portions to eat with her whole family, when everyone can't arrange time to visit the restaurant together.

The old man's happiness is to stand at the shop every day.

As for himself, Uncle Suon confided that he will sell noodles until he no longer has the strength. At his age, he has no more wishes, because his parents’ noodle shop has been inherited by his grandchildren. He is happy and joyful to still stand at the shop every day, and to be able to chat with customers who come to support him.
