This morning (October 2), Mr. Thai Luong Thien, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Tuong Duong district (Nghe An) informed that rising floodwaters caused Luong Minh Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities to be deeply submerged, a large amount of mud and soil flooded into the school and classrooms.
“Although the mud was cleared on the morning of October 1, there is still a lot of mud left, so students still cannot go to school this morning. Currently, local authorities, schools, police, military, youth union... are working hard to clean up,” said Mr. Thien.
Luong Minh Primary Boarding School has 299 boarding students and 30 staff and teachers. On the night of September 30, flash floods occurred in the area, causing the water level to rise. All students were guided and taken to a safe place by teachers. However, due to the rapid and sudden rise of the floodwaters, almost all of their clothes, books, and teaching materials were damaged.
Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh, Principal of Luong Minh Primary School for Ethnic Minorities, said: "The floodwaters rose so high that teachers were caught off guard. Mud flooded four rows of houses. Teachers only had time to take students to higher ground and salvage a few school supplies."
After the incident, to ensure the safety of the students, the school notified parents to come and pick up their children. Many students went to the homes of relatives near the school to stay temporarily.
“Many books and equipment were damaged after the deep flooding. The school is calling for support from units to serve future teaching and learning. The work of cleaning and renovating the student cafeteria is still being urgently carried out. It is expected that students will return in the next 1-2 days,” Mr. Thanh shared.
“Up to this point, the road leading to the commune center has been able to circulate normally. The authorities continue to urgently implement measures to overcome the consequences of the flood so that people can soon stabilize their lives and welcome students back to school,” said Mr. Vi Van Phuc, Chairman of the People's Committee of Luong Minh Commune.
