With a perfect score of 150/150 points in English in the Cambridge IGCSE exam, 11th grade student Tran Ngoc Bao (Nguyen Sieu Secondary and High School, Hanoi) became the candidate with the highest score in the world in English.
In the Cambridge IGCSE exam, Bao took 5 subjects: English, Math, Biology, Physics, Chemistry. In addition to English, which he achieved a perfect score of 150/150, Bao also scored quite high in the other 4 subjects, from 91-95/100 points.
When he received his English test results, although he was quite confident in his work, Bao still could not believe that he had achieved such an "unbelievable" score. He even had to check with his teacher to see if it was correct. When he was sure that the results were correct, Bao felt overwhelmed with emotion. Only then did he dare to show his parents about his achievements in a state of elation.

Sharing about his way of learning English, Bao said: I don’t consider English as a subject so I don’t feel pressured. For me, English is the language I use every day, in my life. Since primary school, I have had the habit of reading books, learning knowledge in English, watching sports, entertainment, animal world programs… in English. At school, I also often speak English with foreign teachers.
Talking about her son's recent achievement in the Cambridge IGCSE exam, Ms. Ha Thanh An (Tran Ngoc Bao's mother) said that this was truly a "gift from heaven". "With this exam, Bao did not focus on the achievement so he was not pressured or worried. Before the exam, he did not "study day and night". He still spent time playing and entertaining like before. Therefore, when we learned that he got a perfect score in English, the family was quite surprised and happy with this result that exceeded expectations".
Ms. Thanh An said that both she and her husband studied abroad before, so they knew the importance of English. Therefore, when her child was still young, she sent him to study English and exposed him to English. "If you want English to become your child's language, the support of parents must be very persistent and patient. Studying for exams and getting an international English certificate, your child may only need to focus on studying for 1-2 years. But for English to become your child's second language, this process must be very long. Knowing that my child is interested in animals, my husband and I often buy books and stories in English about the animal world for him to read, and open channels about sports and the animal world for him to watch. We create an environment for our child to be exposed to English in a natural and intimate way so that English gradually soaks in and becomes a familiar language for him."
Tran Ngoc Bao and mother
The mother of the candidate with the highest score in English in the world said that her son is a good thinker and has a good memory. However, he is not a hard worker. "It is enough to say that he is a person who does not need to be forced. He is quite independent and often decides his own things. Studying two programs (regular program and Cambridge program) is quite difficult, but that is also his choice. There is not much time for extra classes, and there is very little time for self-study, so he always has to focus on studying in class so that he has time to... play at home. He still spends time playing soccer, basketball, and playing online games with friends. However, because he has studied the basic knowledge firmly, his results in the recent Cambridge IGCSE exam were quite good," Ms. Thanh An shared.
It is known that, up to this point, Bao has achieved an average score of 9.5/10 according to the Vietnamese program and A/A* (from 80/100 points or higher) in Cambridge subjects. Bao's results are among the highest in the class. The male student also achieved an SAT score of 1,520/1600.
Talking about his future goals, Bao said he is looking for a scholarship opportunity to study abroad in the US, pursuing a major related to Biology.
IGCSE is an international high school certificate recognized globally. Candidates can choose to study a minimum of 5 subjects and a maximum of 14 subjects out of 70 subjects in the IGCSE program, depending on their own orientation. According to the announcement of the Cambridge International Examinations Council, Tran Ngoc Bao also achieved A* - the highest level, in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology.
In the IGCSE exam, the English test consists of 4 skills: Listening - Speaking - Reading - Writing. The test for each skill consists of 3 parts with multiple choice questions combined with essay questions, on many topics from nature to society, along with current issues.
To achieve a perfect score in IGCSE, candidates must have a foundation of knowledge and the ability to expand, link information and solve problems.
