Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Joe Biden met on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, in November 2022.

Reuters reported on September 19 that Chinese President Xi Jinping has responded to a letter from two American veterans of the Flying Tigers who supported China during World War II.

"Looking to the future, China and the United States are two big countries and have more responsibilities for world peace, stability and development. The two countries need and must achieve mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and mutually beneficial cooperation," he wrote.

In the letter, the leader said that China and the United States had shared enemies in the fight against Japanese imperialism and had forged a "deep" friendship.

The call for stable, peaceful relations comes after a series of high-level meetings between officials from the two countries over the past few months aimed at reducing tensions and restoring communication channels, including those between the two militaries.

The Flying Tigers were a group of soldiers, including former American pilots, who came to help China fight the Japanese empire in 1941-1942.

These pilots, flying planes with shark-head emblems, were famous in China for their courage in facing the superior Japanese forces, and they had to take off from rudimentary airstrips hand-built by the Chinese in the countryside.

Previously on September 18, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng met with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly meeting in New York City (New York State, USA).

Mr. Han Zheng said that the world's two largest economies face many difficulties and challenges, while "the world needs a healthy and stable US-China relationship, which is beneficial not only to China and the US but also to the whole world".

In another development, Interfax news agency on September 19 quoted Russian Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev as saying that Russian President Vladimir Putin will visit Beijing in October to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

In Beijing, Mr Putin will attend a forum on China's Belt and Road initiative, according to Mr Patrushev.
