China investigates two former defense ministers for corruption

The decision was made after a meeting on Thursday of the 24-member Politburo of the Communist Party of China, Xinhua news agency reported.

The announcement comes months after Li Shangfu was removed from his post in October 2023, just seven months after he took office. Wei Fenghe held the post from 2018 to 2023.

The investigation into Mr. Li Shangfu began on August 31 and concluded that he had accepted “a large sum of money.” Mr. Wei Fenghe was investigated on September 21 and accused of accepting illegal gifts and “a large sum of money.”

Both officials will face criminal prosecution, Xinhua said, marking the first time in the history of the People's Liberation Army that corruption investigations into two former defense ministers have been announced on the same day.
