On July 20, speaking with Tuoi Tre Online, Mr. Ho Van Duy, a seafood exporter in Binh Dinh province, shared about the situation of fish egg exports in the first half of 2024.
In addition to selling shrimp and fish, this business also exports herring eggs and flying fish eggs from Ly Son and Quy Nhon.
"Domestic sales are around 320,000 - 350,000 VND/kg. Exports are selected goods, due to strict market requirements, so they sell for more than 400,000 VND/kg; depending on the time, it can be nearly 500,000 VND/kg. In early summer or late March of the lunar calendar, flying fish eggs are abundant, so the company's export volume is quite stable at this time," Mr. Duy informed.
"Fish eggs have many nutrients that are good for health. Compared to Japan or countries with advantages in the sea, the price of our fish eggs has received good feedback, so foreign customers like it," Mr. Duy added.
In addition, in recent years, "black diamond" - Vietnamese caviar - has also appeared on the "world's dining table" with quality no different from other countries.
According to the leader of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), since 2005 Vietnam has been raising sturgeon, a cold-water aquatic species.
In Vietnam's aquaculture farms, there are four main species of sturgeon: Siberian sturgeon, Beluga sturgeon, Russian sturgeon, and Sterlet sturgeon. Of these, the most popular is Siberian sturgeon.
VASEP leaders acknowledged: "Vietnamese sturgeon has a lower feed coefficient and a short time to produce eggs, and low labor costs, helping Vietnamese sturgeon eggs compete with brands from temperate countries.
Although the size of the eggs is smaller than other famous caviar varieties in the world, the color and flavor are extremely similar, so Vietnamese caviar is popular and exported to Russia and countries such as France, Belgium, and Germany.
According to the General Department of Customs, in May 2024 alone, Vietnam exported about 316 tons of caviar at a price of 16.7 USD/kg (about 420,000 VND/kg), earning 5.3 million USD.
Caviar exports increased nearly 84 times compared to the same period in 2023
According to the General Department of Customs, in the first 6 months of 2024, seafood exports earned 4.4 billion USD, a slight increase of 6.2% over the same period last year. Of which, shrimp and pangasius accounted for a large proportion but only increased slightly.
The sharp increase is in exported fish eggs, the average export price of fish eggs increased by nearly 567% compared to the same period in 2023. Among the product groups of the seafood industry, the average export price of fish eggs is ranked top 1.
Specifically, in nearly half a year, Vietnam exported 1,336 tons of fish eggs, earning 22.2 million USD; equivalent to an increase of nearly 84 times compared to the same period last year.
