According to former centre-back William Gallas, before retiring, coach Jose Mourinho still has the ability to bring success to at least one club.
"I think Jose has always had something special," Gallas told Genting Casino on January 30. "He can have another big moment as a manager, or the last dance. I think it all depends on the players he works with. Jose needs warriors, the type of players who will fight for him and are also big enough to take criticism from him."
Gallas believes that today's generation of players is completely different to those Mourinho successfully led at Chelsea, Inter and Real Madrid. According to him, today's generation does not accept criticism, does not understand hard work, lacks dedication and lacks the warrior spirit.
Gallas cited the example of Roma players, who he said did not have the same winning mentality as Mourinho. Meanwhile, Roma fans loved the Portuguese coach and protested the board's decision to fire him.
Newcastle are among the clubs linked with Mourinho. However, Gallas believes the current Newcastle squad is not up to the standard and is not ready to compete in the Premier League, which could hurt Mourinho's ambitions.
"When Mourinho joined Chelsea in 2004, most of us were playing for the national team and were top players," Gallas added. "I don't think Newcastle have that level. If he wants to go back to the Premier League and win trophies, I don't think Newcastle are the right choice."
Mourinho has won 26 trophies with FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, Man Utd and Roma. He has won two Champions Leagues, two UEFA Cups/Europa Leagues and one Conference League. Mourinho is the only manager to have won all three of UEFA's current European Cups.
On January 16, Roma fired Mourinho. The incident occurred just over a year after winning the Conference League title, the club's first European Cup, and more than half a year after winning the Europa League final. Roma's leadership was disappointed when Mourinho's team fell to ninth in Serie A. After taking over, new coach Daniele De Rossi helped Roma win two consecutive Serie A matches against Verona and Salernitana.
