In 2023, starting with 16 deer bought from Huong Son, Ha Tinh to raise, up to now, after nearly 2 years of care, the deer herd of Mr. Vi Van Nghiep, Agricultural and Service Cooperative, Nghiep Doan, commune Dong Van is developing very steadily.
The herd of deer raised for velvet antlers belongs to Mr. Vi Van Nghiep, Agricultural and Service Cooperative of Nghiep Doan in Dong Van commune, Binh Lieu district.
Deer are wild animals, so during the process of building the cage, Mr. Nghiep made the entire frame of the cage from wood and the floor of the cage was regularly treated with probiotics, so it was almost odorless. On average, every 4-5 months, all waste from the deer herd is used to fertilize elephant grass, which is used as a food source for the deer. The eating characteristics of this species are purely natural food. The main food source is grass and some agricultural by-products, so the cost is not high and the occurrence of diseases is also very low. Up to this point, Mr. Nghiep has mastered the process of raising deer and has spawned 2 more deer, increasing the total herd from 16 to 18.
Taking us to visit the deer farm, Mr. Vi Van Nghiep shared: After nearly 2 years, the deer herd has grown and developed well. I also want to develop, expand and breed in the near future to increase the livestock herd and aim to make it a model for people to come and learn about, develop together and provide breeding animals.
After nearly 2 years of investment and care, the deer herd began to produce velvet.
With a temperate climate and weather similar to that of Huong Son, Ha Tinh, Mr. Vi Van Nghiep has successfully brought deer to Dong Van, Binh Lieu district to raise. In terms of economic value, a deer can produce antlers for up to 20 years and on average each deer produces 6-8 ounces of antlers per cut. It is expected that in more than a month, his herd of 18 deer will have 12 antlers harvested. With a selling price of 1.6-2 million VND/ounce, on average, Vi Van Nghiep earns 18 million VND per deer raised for antlers.
Leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Binh Lieu district visited the deer antler farming model of Mr. Vi Van Nghiep.
Mr. La Ngoc Duong, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Binh Lieu district, said: Through monitoring and field visits, we initially assessed that the deer antler farming model of Mr. Vi Van Nghiep has brought about efficiency when the deer herd has reproduced and is very suitable for the soil and climate conditions in Binh Lieu. This is also a typical model of the district to replicate for households as well as cooperatives that want to invest in the livestock sector to further develop the economy in the coming time. Currently, the average income per capita in the district has reached 75.5 million VND/person/year and the locality's goal is to strive to reach 100 million VND/person/year by the end of this year.
With the advantages of breeding characteristics and economic value, from this deer antler farming model, Mr. Vi Van Nghiep also plans to research and apply science and technology to make new products from deer antlers to develop cooperative economy, thereby helping to increase income, towards sustainable development.
