Lao Cai City Medical Center is implementing deworming activities for primary school students to reduce the infection rate and intensity of worm infection in high-risk groups in the city.

Currently, 10/17 communes and wards in the area have implemented deworming for primary school students. This activity is continuing to be implemented in schools with the goal of over 95% of primary school students being assigned to deworm.

To ensure the program runs smoothly and safely, health station staff investigated and compiled a list of primary school students for each class and each specific school; coordinated with teachers, school health workers, village health workers, and population collaborators to deworm students simultaneously in the classroom.

Before deworming, students are carefully screened to rule out contraindications and ensure that all students are given deworming medication directly by medical staff.

In addition, health station staff also promote communication activities for primary school students about the causes, effects, measures to prevent and control worms and parasites, and the benefits of deworming.
In addition to primary school students, health stations in communes and wards will also carry out deworming for women of reproductive age from 15 to 45 years old in village clusters and groups of communes and wards in the city.
The main soil-transmitted parasitic worms that cause human disease are roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms.
People with mild infections often have no symptoms. People with more severe infections may experience a range of symptoms including gastrointestinal manifestations such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, irritability, weakness, and impaired cognitive and physical development. Hookworms cause chronic intestinal blood loss that can lead to anemia.
Measures to prevent and control soil-transmitted helminthiasis include regular deworming, communication, health education to prevent reinfection, environmental sanitation...
