This morning, October 17, the Provincial Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Quang Tri province solemnly held a ceremony to award the title of "Hero of the People's Armed Forces" (AHLLVTND) to Mr. Duong Ba Quy, former Commune Team Leader of Gio My Commune, Gio Linh District. Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Vo Van Hung; leaders of departments, branches, and units; leaders of Gio Linh District, Gio My Commune, and family representatives attended.

Born and raised in An My village, Gio My commune, Gio Linh district with a rich revolutionary tradition, Mr. Duong Ba Quy was enlightened early and joined the revolution when he was only 13 years old.
During more than 15 years of revolutionary activities, he participated in dozens of large and small battles; from a guerrilla fighter to a commune team leader, he achieved many outstanding achievements.
With his intelligence, bravery, and fearlessness of hardship and sacrifice, Mr. Quy was honored by his comrades, teammates, and people as "the brave American killer" and the title "the gray tiger of Quang Tri".
He left his mark in many typical battles, such as: In January 1968, directly commanding a guerrilla team using homemade mines, secretly approaching a Jeep carrying puppet officers and American soldiers on patrol in Lai An village, Gio My commune, killing 5 people, including the Gio Linh District Chief; on the night of March 18 to 19, 1968, when the enemy opened fire on the eastern part of Gio Linh district, the guerrilla teams commanded by Mr. Quy opened fire and pretended to retreat, causing them to fall into a pre-arranged battlefield, resulting in the killing of 51 people, including 1 American advisor, the destruction of 1 tank, and the capture of many weapons and equipment.
On March 23, 1968, Mr. Quy commanded the Gio My commune guerrilla force to coordinate with the main units in the area to fight against the sweep of the US infantry. As a result, he broke 9 enemy attacks, pursued and killed 267 enemies, captured dozens of enemies, shot down 1 plane on the spot, and seized many weapons.
Mr. Quy was also one of the brave, creative, decisive, and persistent soldiers in breaking through the US's McNamara electronic fence. Together with his teammates, he had a unique way of fighting, breaking through each section of the electronic fence, creating favorable conditions for our army and people to defeat the US's war escalation actions.

In particular, Mr. Quy was brave, courageous, defying danger and hardship alone in the dark, under the rain of bombs and bullets, to carry the bodies of 31 fallen soldiers across the Canh Hom River to a safe burial place.
The brave actions, heroic example and achievements of comrade Duong Ba Quy are a great encouragement and motivation for comrades, teammates, cadres and people to fight and defeat the invaders, to protect the homeland and country.
Summing up the resistance war against the US to save the country, Mr. Duong Ba Quy directly commanded the unit to coordinate 67 battles, together with other forces, destroyed 145 enemies, captured 2 Americans, seized 145 guns of various types, destroyed 22 tanks, shot down 1 plane, 4 GMCs, 2 Jeeps, captured 12 puppet soldiers, educated and reformed dozens of puppet soldiers.
Directly organized 5 guerrilla groups and revolutionary bases, together with the people and the commune guerrilla force built hundreds of secret tunnels. With his great contributions, Mr. Duong Ba Quy was awarded many noble awards by the Party, State and army: 1 First Class Medal of Resistance War against America for National Salvation; 8 First, Second and Third Class Medals of Military Exploit; 1 Second Class Medal of Victory; 6 Emulation Soldier Certificates; 17 American-killing brave soldiers, Determined-to-Win brave soldiers and many other certificates of merit.
After peace was restored, he always promoted the spirit of a revolutionary soldier, a cadre, a party member, and was the Secretary of the Gio My Commune Party Committee, Deputy Director of Con Tien Farm, Gio Linh District, actively participating in the work, restoring production, and building his homeland. With his outstanding achievements, he was honored to be awarded the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces by the President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam under Decision No. 960/QD-CTN dated September 30, 2024.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Vo Van Hung emphasized that after many years of fighting, Mr. Duong Ba Quy was not afraid of sacrifice and hardship, persistently held on, organized and built forces and led the revolutionary movement, achieving many outstanding achievements.
His bravery, intelligence and creativity in combat contributed significantly to the overall victory of the nation. His achievements and contributions were not only meaningful during the resistance war, but also left valuable lessons for the cause of building and defending the country today.
He is a shining example of loyalty to the Party and the people, always maintaining the qualities of a revolutionary soldier, no matter what the circumstances, always putting the interests of the Fatherland first, always fighting for the fatherland, for the homeland.
The Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee affirmed that the title of Hero of the People's Armed Forces that the State conferred on Mr. Duong Ba Quy is a noble reward, a worthy recognition of his great contributions and sacrifices to the revolutionary cause. This is also an honor, a source of encouragement and motivation for all cadres, soldiers and people of Quang Tri province on the path of building and defending the homeland and the Fatherland in the new period.
