In the trend of abundant supply of essential food and foodstuffs after Tet, the fruit industry is also bustling with wholesale in the Ho Chi Minh City market.

Notably, not only do many domestic fruit products have preferential prices for consumers, but imported products are also actively participating in the "race" for cheap prices in the city market.

Specifically, it was noted that at shopping malls, supermarkets, and convenience stores such as Co.opXtra, Co.opmart, Satramart, Satrafood, MM Mega Market, Bach Hoa Xanh... a series of domestic and foreign fruit products have been "running" discount and promotion programs in rotation since right after the Lunar New Year of At Ty 2025 until now.

In particular, there are domestic fruit products such as red-fleshed watermelon at 19,000 VND/kg reduced to 9,000 VND/kg; orange-fleshed watermelon at 35,000 VND/kg reduced to 32,000 VND/kg; oranges with promotional price of 17,000 VND/kg; green-skinned melon at 23,000 VND/kg; green-skinned grapefruit at 52,000 VND/kg... Along with that, other domestic fruit products, including: durian, avocado, banana, passion fruit, mango, rambutan... have abundant supply and are richly displayed on counters and shelves of modern retail channels in Ho Chi Minh City.

The supply of imported fruits is also abundant and therefore the prices are significantly lower than the same period last year. Typically, some retailers in Ho Chi Minh City have launched imported cherries priced at only 160,000 - 350,000 VND/kg, while the price of this type of foreign fruit in previous seasons was commonly around 500,000 VND/kg, depending on the origin of the product.

At other retail outlets in Ho Chi Minh City, some imported fruit products include red grapes with no promotional price of 169,000 VND/kg; seedless black grapes 179,000 VND/kg; gala apples 49,000 VND/kg... Particularly at the MM Mega Market center system, the Kiwi Festival is being held, with green kiwis at a promotional price of 45,000 - 69,000 VND/kg; yellow kiwis 65,000 - 109,000 VND/kg...

Explaining the reason why domestic fruit prices are cheap right after the Lunar New Year of At Ty in 2025 and do not have an upward trend like previous years, Mr. Thanh Trung, a trader at Thu Duc agricultural and food wholesale market, Ho Chi Minh City, said that recently, purchasing power before and during the Tet holiday has decreased somewhat compared to the same period last year, so the amount of inventory is significant and prices must be reduced to stimulate consumption.

To ensure supply for the Tet market, many retailers, traders, and small businesses have increased the quantity of goods in stock, and fruit is a short-term storage product, so to ensure quality to consumers, it is necessary to bring it to the market within a certain period of time.

Regarding the group of foreign fruits, Ms. Hoang Anh, owner of a store specializing in imported fruits on Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street, Ho Chi Minh City, pointed out that, currently, people's income is increasing, so the trend of food consumption is also more strict, especially the concern about food safety. Therefore, imported fruits are one of the product groups that meet this consumer taste, including products originating from the US, Europe, New Zealand, etc.

According to the opinions of retailers and fruit businesses in Ho Chi Minh City, in recent years, although the food and foodstuff industry has maintained its sales, it has not escaped the trend of people saving on spending in the context of complicated economic developments and rising market prices.

Therefore, in addition to product quality, in the "race" of competition, to attract customers, the price must be as cheap as possible. At the same time, Vietnamese people increasingly have the habit of prioritizing the purchase of high-quality Vietnamese goods, so price competition is also considered one of the solutions for foreign goods to approach the market.

From a consumer perspective, Ms. Anh Nguyet, residing in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City, shared that in order to diversify the use of food, her family buys both domestic and foreign fruits, but after quality, price is the deciding factor in whether to consume or not. In addition, her family also prioritizes using seasonal fruits, which both ensure quality and are more affordable than buying off-season fruits.

Sharing the same opinion, Ms. My Ngoc, residing in Phu Nhuan District, Ho Chi Minh City, said that for the food and foodstuff industry in general, and fruits in particular, consumers need to choose reputable and branded points of sale to be able to trace the origin of the product. Typically, when shopping and consuming foreign fruits, consumers must carefully check the labels, production dates, origin, etc. to limit the risk of goods being close to or past their expiration date, or products that do not ensure fresh quality according to prescribed standards, etc.

According to the report of the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City, the market before, during and after the Lunar New Year 2025 is guaranteed an abundant supply of goods; in which, market stabilization goods promote leadership and contribute to proactively supplying the market.

To ensure the supply of goods from after Tet until now, the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City continues to require retailers and businesses to stabilize the market, stimulate consumption by diversifying incentives, discounts, promotions, etc., to meet the needs of shopping and consuming essential goods.
