In recent days, Ho Chi Minh City and neighboring provinces and cities have experienced unseasonal rains. The rain helps keep the weather cool and pleasant, but it also has potential health risks.

Dr. Tran Dac Nguyen Anh - Head of the Department of Examination on Demand - Children's Health, Children's Hospital 2, said that unseasonal rain can cause children to suffer from respiratory diseases, colds, flu, allergies, skin diseases, digestive diseases...

Specifically, children may suffer from sore throat, bronchitis, pneumonia due to humid weather creating favorable conditions for viruses and bacteria to grow. Children with a history of asthma may have their condition worsen.

Sudden changes in weather make children susceptible to viruses that cause colds and flu, with symptoms such as fever, cough, and runny nose.

High humidity increases the risk of dermatitis, diaper rash, heat rash and fungal skin infections. In addition, children are susceptible to skin irritation and hives due to weather allergies.

Unseasonal rain can also make children susceptible to intestinal infections, diarrhea, and food poisoning.

Rain causes water to accumulate, creating a favorable environment for Aedes mosquitoes to breed, increasing the risk of dengue fever. High humidity also increases hand, foot and mouth disease because the virus spreads quickly in wet conditions.

Increased air humidity creates an ideal environment for influenza viruses, RSV, adenoviruses and bacteria. These are agents that cause upper respiratory tract infections such as sore throat, bronchitis and pneumonia.

Children are also susceptible to influenza when exposed to crowded environments. Children with weak constitutions or underlying medical conditions (asthma, congenital heart disease, chronic lung disease, etc.) are especially susceptible to more severe illness.

Parents should note that when children have symptoms of fever, cough, vomiting, and diarrhea, they should take them to a pediatrician for examination. Do not self-treat children at home, especially children under 3 months old who have a fever should see a doctor immediately.

To ensure children's health, Dr. Nguyen Anh recommends that parents keep their children warm when the weather turns cold and ensure adequate nutrition to increase resistance.

Fully vaccinate children against influenza, especially children under 5 years old. Limit children from playing in the rain, avoid wearing wet clothes for a long time. Wear a mask when going to public places or limit going out if not necessary.

Maintain personal hygiene, wash hands regularly, and practice food hygiene. Kill mosquitoes and turn water containers upside down to limit mosquito breeding.
