"The school has worked with the interdisciplinary inspection team of Ward 22, Binh Thanh District and the inspection team of the Binh Thanh District Health Department to determine the cause of the incident that occurred during the boarding meal on February 12," a representative of Wellspring Saigon International Bilingual School recently said when talking to Tuoi Tre Online.
Accordingly, on the morning of February 13, the school worked with the interdisciplinary inspection team of Ward 22, Binh Thanh District (including: Ward 22 health chief, Ward 22 economic officer, local police and urban order of Ward 22).
The meeting had representatives of the school's parents and the parents of grade 7/6 students.
On the afternoon of February 13, the inspection team of Binh Thanh District Health Department continued to go to the school to inspect and determine the cause of the incident that occurred during the lunch on February 12.
The two working groups reviewed the entire kitchen process, from importing goods, processing, preserving food to checking origin records; the school showed a clip recorded by students (about discovering live larvae crawling in the lunch tray).
Specifically, the tray containing the pan-fried salmon dish) was shown to the inspection team; members of the working session viewed the apple sample with similar larvae found in the remaining apple sample (these apple samples had not yet been divided into the student's food rations on February 12; when the incident was discovered, the school stopped and did not let the students eat the apples);...
"The test results showed that the larvae found in the students' lunch trays were apple worms, originating from the dessert - Phan Rang green apples. This is a non-toxic worm that usually lives in fresh fruit.
The interdisciplinary inspection team of Ward 22, Binh Thanh District also confirmed that the school strictly followed the food hygiene and safety process. We would like to send the working minutes clearly showing this" - a representative of Wellspring Saigon International Bilingual School told Tuoi Tre Online.
According to the above representative: "In addition, the school has also sent food samples from the luncheon meal on February 12 for testing at the Ho Chi Minh City Center for Laboratory Analysis Services (CASE). The results are expected to be available on February 20.
In addition, the school also removed green apples from the menu from February 13, prioritizing safer and pre-cut fruits; Strengthening supervision, checking the source of goods and the process of receiving and preparing food...".
It is known that the incident happened during the lunch break on February 12, a student of grade 7/6 discovered larvae crawling in the tray of his pan-fried salmon. He screamed and showed it to other students.
After the initial inspection, the leaders of Wellspring Saigon International Bilingual School said that the larvae most likely came from green apples (because the apple compartment was located next to the pan-fried salmon compartment in the students' lunch trays).
Because apples are fresh fruits, there is a risk of natural larvae even after being processed. When checking the remaining apples in the distribution area, the kitchen staff also discovered some apples with larvae. In particular, salmon dishes are processed in 3 steps at high temperatures, so larvae are unlikely to survive (if any).
Parents request direct supervision of boarding meals
It is known that at the working session with the interdisciplinary inspection team on the morning of February 13, the representative of Wellspring Saigon School's parents requested to directly inspect and supervise the school's boarding meal preparation stages.
Regarding the above issue, a representative of Wellspring Saigon School said: "Parents can inspect the kitchen or other services of the school at any time during the school year. Parents just need to make an appointment with the parent-teacher association so that the association can send someone to coordinate with the school to carry out the work."
Regarding the health status of students, a representative of Wellspring Saigon School confirmed: "Up to this point, the school's medical diary has not recorded any abnormalities related to the above incident."
