On the same day (November 6), Reuters news agency reported that Mr. Putin has decided to participate in the presidential election in March next year. If he wins, he will hold power until at least 2030.

The source also said that domestic polls show that Putin's approval rating is 80%. Moreover, with the support of state media and almost no dissent among the public, Putin is likely to win.

Speaking to the press when mentioning the above information, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov affirmed that President Putin has not yet made any statement on this issue and the presidential election campaign for the next term has not been announced.

The Federation Council (the upper house of parliament) will decide on the election date in December. After that, political parties will need to hold congresses and nominate candidates.

Russia is scheduled to hold a presidential election on March 17, 2024, and incumbent President Vladimir Putin still has the right to run for another term.

Mr Putin, 70, is in his fourth term as president. In the March 2000 election, Mr Putin topped 10 candidates and became the second president of the post-Soviet Russia after Boris Yeltsin resigned. Mr Putin served two consecutive terms as president, from May 7, 2000 to May 7, 2008.

In 2012, Mr. Putin ran for president again, and was elected for a third term with 63% of the vote. In 2018, Mr. Putin won 77% of the vote in the March presidential election for a six-year term that will end in 2024.

In 2020, after a referendum, Russia passed constitutional amendments that removed presidential term limits, paving the way for Mr. Putin to stay in power until 2036.
