Austria was one of the first Western European countries to recognize and establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam in December 1972. Over the past 50 years, the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Austria has had a solid foundation and achieved many achievements in all three aspects of politics, economy and culture - people-to-people exchange.

In particular, economic cooperation has become a pillar in bilateral relations. In recent years, economic and trade relations between Vietnam and the EU in general and Austria in particular have seen very positive developments. Austria is always among the top 10 trade partners of Vietnam in the European Union (EU).
Trade turnover between the two countries regularly reaches around 3 billion USD despite recent negative political and economic impacts in Europe and globally. In particular, with the Free Trade Agreement between Vietnam and the European Union (EVFTA) taking effect from August 2020, two-way trade turnover, although declining due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, still increased nearly 12 times compared to 10 years ago.
In the structure of Vietnam's exports to Austria, telecommunications equipment and mobile phones account for a large proportion. Some of the products that Austria is importing a lot from Vietnam are unroasted coffee (from Vietnam, Brazil and Honduras), roasted coffee (from Germany and Italy) because Austria is a country with a coffee drinking culture recognized by UNESCO as a cultural heritage and a developed tourism industry. Fresh and frozen seafood from Vietnam is also a product that Austria is interested in because Austria is landlocked.
In addition, the economies of the two countries are considered to be very complementary to each other as Austria has technology and high management skills, while Vietnam has a large market, an open economy as a gateway to Southeast Asia and Asia, and a young, dynamic and creative workforce.
As a unit under the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam, the Vietnam Trade Office in Austria (concurrently in Slovenia) plays an important role in promoting economic, trade and investment cooperation between Vietnam and Egypt.
In particular, contributing to the bilateral economic and trade cooperation between Vietnam and Austria in recent times, the Vietnam Trade Office in Austria has coordinated with the Ministry of Industry and Trade and the Vietnamese Embassy in Austria to actively organize trade promotion activities, connect businesses, and provide market information to Vietnamese and local businesses.
In addition, the agency also edited and published the first publication on the Austrian market, serving as a useful market research document for Vietnamese businesses and relevant agencies.
Outstanding activities of the Vietnam Trade Office in Austria in 2024
In 2024, according to the Vietnam Trade Office in Austria, although there were few people and they had to take on multilateral tasks such as monitoring UNIDO as well as bilateral diplomacy with Slovenia, the office completed the tasks assigned by the Ministry of Industry and Trade such as: Organizing a Business Forum on the Austrian and Slovenian markets for Vietnamese enterprises; leading purchasing enterprises to attend Sourcing Vietnam 2024 organized by the European and American Department, Ministry of Industry and Trade from September 6-8, 2024 in Ho Chi Minh City.
At the same time, the trade office continues to bring Vietnamese agricultural, forestry and fishery products to the Austrian market, promote Hanoi beer at the Water Splashing Festival, the Austrian and Asian food and culture festival in Austria; attend the Export Bonus Day for Austrian enterprises, support enterprises to connect with Austrian enterprises on pharmaceutical processing from Vietnamese materials such as gac oil products, fermented black garlic, ginger, lemon, kumquat... for sale in Austria; connect and support Vietnamese enterprises to work with Slovenia to produce sand crushers and participate in fairs to find partners.
In addition, the Vietnam Trade Office in Austria also researched and provided information on the Electricity Law, Chemical Law, Austrian Industrial Law, and Slovenian labor regulations to support Vietnamese enterprises exporting labor to Slovenia. In particular, the Trade Office supported Vietnamese enterprises in resolving problems regarding the form of Certificate of Fragrant Rice Variety at Koper Port.
In addition, supporting the connection and providing information for the Vietnam News Agency in the EU, the agency interviewed the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Affairs of Slovenia, the General Director of the Slovenian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIS), and the Vietnamese Ambassador to Slovenia.
To continue organizing activities to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Vietnam - Slovenia diplomatic relations, the Vietnam Trade Office in Austria continues to support Slovenia and the Ministry of Industry and Trade in preparing to sign a cooperation MOU and send a delegation of logistics businesses to Vietnam in September 2024 to promote trade and investment between the two countries, especially direct sea connections through Koper, Slovenia's important gateway to EU countries.
