General Secretary and President To Lam meets with Canadian and Belgian Prime Ministers

NDO – Continuing activities within the framework of the 19th Francophone Summit in Paris, France, on the morning of October 5, local time, General Secretary and President To Lam met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo.

* At the meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, General Secretary and President To Lam affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to the Comprehensive Partnership with Canada; Vietnam will work with Canada to continue to deepen this relationship in all areas, on the basis of mutual benefit and trust, contributing to maintaining peace, stability and development in the region and the world; thanked Canadian Governor General Mary Simon for her congratulatory letter on the occasion of assuming her new responsibilities; and thanked Canada for dedicating 560,000 Canadian dollars (415,000 USD) to support Vietnam in overcoming the consequences of Typhoon Yagi.

Congratulating Canada on assuming the G7 Presidency, the General Secretary and President affirmed that Vietnam will continue to work with Canada and other G7 member countries to contribute to G7 cooperation, including green growth and sustainable development.

To promote the Comprehensive Partnership between the two countries, General Secretary and President To Lam suggested that the two sides increase the exchange of delegations at all levels; improve the effectiveness of existing bilateral dialogue mechanisms; make good use of opportunities of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) for increasingly substantive and effective economic, trade and investment cooperation; strengthen cooperation in responding to climate change; actively coordinate and support each other at multilateral forums, including the United Nations and La Francophonie.

Agreeing with the proposals of General Secretary and President To Lam on the direction for developing bilateral relations, Prime Minister Trudeau affirmed that Canada attaches importance to its relations with Vietnam and will continue to promote the Comprehensive Partnership in priority areas, especially politics-diplomacy, economics-trade, defense, education-training and people-to-people exchange; and will continue to support Vietnam in participating in the United Nations peacekeeping force (PKO).

The General Secretary and President asked Prime Minister Trudeau and the Canadian Government to continue creating favorable conditions for the Vietnamese community to live and work in Canada. For his part, Prime Minister Trudeau highlighted the role of the Vietnamese student community in Canada in the development of bilateral relations.

On this occasion, the General Secretary and President invited Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to visit Vietnam at a suitable time. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau happily accepted the invitation and expressed his wish to visit Vietnam soon.

* During the meeting with Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, General Secretary and President To Lam affirmed that Vietnam always attaches importance to the traditional friendship and cooperation with Belgium, an important member of the European Union (EU) and the Francophone Community. The General Secretary and President thanked Belgium for its congratulatory letter on assuming new responsibilities; highly appreciated the Belgian Parliament's adoption of the Resolution on supporting Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange in October 2023; hoped that Belgium would continue to support Vietnam in overcoming the consequences of war, especially supporting victims of Agent Orange; requested Belgium to soon complete the process of ratifying the Vietnam-EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and support the EC to soon remove the IUU "yellow card" on Vietnam's seafood exports; strengthen development cooperation and cooperation in the fields of renewable energy, logistics services, high technology, artificial intelligence, green development, education-training, and cultural exchange; coordinate to effectively utilize the Vietnam-EU Free Trade Agreement (EVIPA).

The Belgian Prime Minister shared his condolences over the damage caused by Typhoon Yagi in Vietnam; appreciated the Vietnamese people's resilience in responding to the storm; and agreed with the proposal of the General Secretary and President on the two countries to strengthen cooperation in responding to climate change.

To further deepen the Vietnam-Belgium relationship, the two leaders agreed to increase the exchange of delegations at all levels, especially at the high level. The Belgian Prime Minister said that he would soon confirm the time of the King and Queen's visit to Vietnam; expressed his wish to soon pay an official visit to Vietnam at an appropriate time. The two sides also affirmed that they would continue to closely coordinate and support each other at multilateral forums and international organizations, contributing to ensuring peace, security, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

The Canadian and Belgian Prime Ministers, together with the General Secretary and President, discussed in depth regional and international issues of mutual concern, including ensuring peace, stability, security, safety and freedom of navigation and aviation in border areas and oceans, including the East Sea; supporting respect for international law; resolving disputes by peaceful means, in accordance with international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
