The list is divided into groups of leaders, innovators, academics and researchers. Among them, CEO, chairman and co-founder of Chinese platform Baidu, Robin Li and 24-year-old billionaire and founder of ScaleAI, Alexandr Wang, are also named.
In addition to figures who regularly appear in the media such as Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the company behind the popular chatbot ChatGPT, or Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI and owns the newly established startup xAI, the list of the most influential people in the field also reveals many names that are quite unfamiliar to the public.
The duo featured on Time's list of top business leaders are Anthropic CEO and chairman Dario and Daniela Amodei.
Anthropic was founded in 2021, spun out of a group of former OpenAI employees who “rebeled.” Shortly after its launch, the startup raised more than $700 million, including $300 million from Google, but this amount only helped the search giant own a 10% stake here.
In industry parlance, “anthropic” means ensuring AI systems are aligned with human values. Dario, 40, and Daniela, 36, believe in a more responsible and safe approach to building AI systems than other research labs.
The startup is a pioneer in a process called “mechanical interpretability,” which allows developers to “brain scan” AI systems, similar to how humans scan their brains, to see what’s actually going on inside an algorithm, rather than just relying on its output.
Now, Anthropic has released the chatbot Claude 2, which competes directly with GPT-4, OpenAI's most powerful language model.
The list of 100 most influential people in the field of AI voted by Time is posted in detail here.
