Billionaire Elon Musk reveals plans to release the "smartest chatbot on earth"

Billionaire Musk revealed plans to launch the Grok 3 chatbot during an interview at the World Government Summit in Dubai on Thursday, calling it an AI model that outperforms any competing tool released to date.

The model is trained on synthetic data and is able to reflect on the mistakes it makes by re-examining the data to achieve logical consistency.

The launch of Grok 3 comes as countries race to introduce more sophisticated and cheaper AI chatbots. DeepSeek, a Chinese AI startup that has shaken up the market with its model on par with OpenAI's ChatGPT, is aggressively recruiting experts in a sign of its rapidly expanding ambitions in the field of artificial intelligence.

xAI was launched by billionaire Musk in 2023 with the ambition to quickly develop an alternative to OpenAI backed by Microsoft and Alphabet's Google. Elon Musk asserted that xAI will create AI technology with maximum trust.

Grok is the first product from the startup xAI, which brings together researchers from OpenAI, Google's DeepMind AI development team, Tesla, and the University of Toronto.

Mr. Musk and Sam Altman — who co-founded OpenAI as a nonprofit in 2015 — have also been embroiled in a long-running battle over the company's direction.

The Tesla CEO recently led a consortium to make a $97.4 billion bid to acquire the nonprofit arm of OpenAI. However, the company’s board of directors flatly rejected Musk’s offer. Analysts believe Musk wants to acquire OpenAI to pave the way for xAI to grow.
