Mrs. Thanh is excited because coconuts sell for high prices. |
In Cho Gao district - the largest coconut growing area in Tien Giang province, recently, the price of dry coconut has been continuously increasing. When we visited Mrs. Bay Thanh's family (An Lac Thuong hamlet, Xuan Dong commune, Cho Gao district), it was also the time when traders came to buy coconuts from her garden.
Ms. Thanh's family has planted 4 hectares of coconut trees for more than 10 years and harvests them once a month on average. According to Ms. Thanh, at this time last year, dried coconuts cost only 70,000 - 80,000 VND/dozen of 12 fruits.
“Before Tet, dried coconuts cost only VND100,000/dozen of 12. However, after Tet, the price of coconuts has increased every day. This time, I sell coconuts for VND200,000/dozen of 12. The price of dried coconuts has never been so high. This time, I harvested more than 500 coconuts because the coconuts were frozen, while in previous harvests, I harvested 700-800 coconuts each time. Although the price is very high, the yield of coconuts has decreased. However, with this price, coconut growers are very excited," said Ms. Thanh.

In fact, recently, due to the limited supply of dry coconuts, prices have increased to record highs. Ms. Hong Thi, the owner of a coconut purchasing warehouse in Xuan Dong commune, Cho Gao district, said that recently, due to the hanging of coconuts, in addition, some coconut gardens were attacked by black-headed worms, so productivity was not high. This led to a decrease in the supply of dry coconuts. Ms. Thi's coconut warehouse supplies the market with about 500 coconuts each day, mainly to the markets.
In Hoa Dinh commune, Cho Gao district, Mr. Nguyen Van Hoa's family has just harvested 3 hectares of coconuts. According to Mr. Hoa, dry coconuts were purchased by traders at 180,000 VND/dozen of 12 fruits, this is the highest price he has ever sold coconuts. Although the productivity has decreased, the selling price is very high. Previously, the price of coconuts was very cheap, only 20,000 - 30,000 VND/dozen of 12 fruits, now the price is high, so coconut growers are very happy.
Tan Phu Dong District is also a locality with a large coconut growing area in Tien Giang Province. In recent days, coconut farmers in the area have been very excited because the price of coconut has been continuously increasing. Mr. Duong Tan Si's family (Tan Thoi Commune, Tan Phu Dong District) has 1.1 hectares of coconut.
Currently, limited supply is the reason for the high price of coconut. |
Mr. Si's family has just sold dried coconuts for 215,000 VND/dozen of 14 fruits. "Currently, there are many coconuts hanging. Every year, at this time, my family's 1.1 hectares of coconuts harvest an average of 1.2 - 1.4 thousand fruits (1 thousand 1,400 fruits), but this year it is only about 1.1 thousand, the yield is not as good as other years. For the first time ever, I sold coconuts for more than 30 million VND/batch," Mr. Si happily said.
According to Mr. Nguyen Manh Tuong, Director of Cho Gao Coconut Cooperative, in recent days, the price of coconuts has increased very high, including both dry and fresh coconuts. Accordingly, dry coconuts bought at the garden cost over 170,000 VND/dozen of 12 coconuts. Fresh coconuts of all kinds bought at the garden cost from 10,000 - 12,000 VND/fruit (1.3 kg or more).
Currently, the supply of coconuts is relatively low, while the demand is high. The reason is that our country is in the hot season, so the demand is high, but the coconut yield has not decreased much. The price of fresh coconuts is 10% - 20% higher than before Tet. Currently, because the export price of coconuts is cheap, while the domestic price is high, the cooperative mainly focuses on domestic orders.
According to the Department of Industry and Trade of Tien Giang province, the province has a large coconut growing area in the Mekong Delta region with more than 21,650 hectares and is constantly expanding.
Over the years, the province has had many preferential mechanisms and new approaches to promote coconut planting and processing activities in the province. In the coming years, the province will continue to provide policy support to replicate effective models to promote the local coconut industry, helping farmers increase their income.
