In a controversial move at the company he bought last year, billionaire Musk said it would soon remove the block feature on X, which allowed users to restrict specific accounts from contacting them, seeing their posts or following them.

“The ‘block’ feature will be removed, except for messages (DMS),” Musk said in a post on X, referring to direct messages. Musk said X will retain the mute feature, which prevents users from seeing specified accounts but is not the same as blocking, according to Reuters.

Billionaire Elon Musk describes himself as a free speech advocate, but some critics say his approach is irresponsible. Researchers have found a rise in hate speech and anti-Semitic content on the X platform since he took over, and some governments have accused the company of not doing enough to moderate its content.

"User safety on X is our number one priority. And we're building something better than the current blocking and muting. Please continue to send feedback," X CEO Linda Yaccarino said in support.

Removing or limiting the blocking feature may cause conflicts between social network X and the policies incorporated by the App Store and Google Play.

Apple says apps with user-generated content must be able to block users from abusing it. Google Play says apps must provide an in-app system to block users and user-generated content.
