On April 16, TikTok announced that it is testing a new feature, called Footnotes, that allows users to provide additional information for misleading videos .
The feature is currently being tested in the US, where TikTok has around 170 million users. Footnotes is considered similar to the Community Notes feature on social network X.
However, TikTok's head of operations, Adam Presser, said that unlike the X network, the short video sharing app will still have its own fact-checking program to deal with the spread of misinformation.
Footnotes will tap into the collective knowledge of the TikTok community by allowing users to add relevant information to content on the platform, helping them better understand a complex or confusing issue, according to Presser.
In addition, users can also evaluate the authenticity of content and access authoritative sources of information.
With the new feature, Footnotes will help enhance TikTok's existing fact-checking measures, such as labeling unverified content and partnering with fact-checking organizations to assess the accuracy of posts on the platform.
Footnotes invitees are adults in the US who have used TikTok for more than six months and have not violated community guidelines.
Contributors can also rate other people's Footnotes. If they are found useful, the Footnotes will be displayed on TikTok and any user can vote for that Footnote as a way to express feedback on the information's value./.
