Promoting bilateral economic, trade and investment cooperation between Vietnam and China

On February 27, on the sidelines of the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference held in the UAE, Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien had a meeting and worked with Mr. Manuel Tovar Rivera, Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica.

Minister of Industry and Trade of Vietnam Nguyen Hong Dien had a meeting and worked with Mr. Manuel Tovar Rivera, Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica.

At the meeting, Minister Nguyen Hong Dien affirmed the importance of the cooperative relationship with Costa Rica. Recognizing that the scale of trade exchange between the two countries is still modest compared to the potential, the Minister suggested that the two sides establish an information exchange channel between the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam and the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Costa Rica, thereby enhancing information exchange and seeking solutions to promote bilateral economic, trade and investment cooperation.

The Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica thanked Minister Nguyen Hong Dien for taking the time to work, affirming that Costa Rica wishes to strengthen relations with ASEAN countries in general and Vietnam in particular. The Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica hopes that Vietnam will support the country to become a member of CPTPP…

The Minister of Foreign Trade of Costa Rica also highly appreciated Vietnam's position in the international arena, and was pleased that trade growth between the two countries has continuously increased over the past 10 years, averaging 11.5% per year, and that the people of this country really like Vietnam's export products.

During the working session, the two Ministers agreed to coordinate with relevant agencies of the two sides to promote business connection activities and create conditions for businesses to participate in each other's trade promotion events.

The 13th Ministerial Conference (MC13) of the World Trade Organization (WTO) takes place in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) from February 26 to February 29, 2024.

The Vietnamese delegation led by Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien attended the Conference and had bilateral meetings and contacts to strengthen and promote bilateral and multilateral cooperation.

Previously, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien had bilateral meetings with: Mr. Jozef Síkela, Minister of Industry and Trade of the Czech Republic; Mr. Arman Shakkaliyev, Minister of Trade and Integration of Kazakhstan; Mr. John Neuffer, President of the Semiconductor Industry Association of the United States; Dr. Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Secretary of State for International Trade, Ministry of Foreign Trade of the United Arab Emirates (UAE); Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director General of the WTO; Mr. Nir Barkat, Minister of Economy and Industry of Israel; met with Ms. Mary Ng, Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development of Canada; met with Mr. Tengku Zafrul Aziz, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) of Malaysia, etc.

The WTO Ministerial Conference is the organization's highest decision-making body and typically meets every two years. Since the WTO was established in 1995, 12 Ministerial Conferences have been held with varying success.

Following MC12 in 2022 in Geneva, Switzerland, a landmark decision setting new global rules to curb harmful subsidies and protect global fish stocks, restored the negotiating function of the multilateral trading system and demonstrated that environmental issues can and should be discussed at the WTO.
