(NLDO) - Scientists are completely confused by the mysterious event that happened to a monster black hole not far from the Milky Way.
An international research team has just conducted detailed observations of NGC 5084, a luminous galaxy located not far from the Milky Way galaxy that contains Earth, known to mankind for centuries, and has made a shocking discovery about its central black hole.
According to Science Alert, the research team led by astronomer Alejandro Borlaff from NASA's Ames Research Center applied new techniques to analyze data from NASA's X-ray Observatory to look closely at the center of NGC 5084.
They noticed something strange: Four long X-ray-emitting plasma streams radiated from the galactic center in an X-shape.

These plasma streams are evidence of past galactic center activity.
When a black hole sucks in matter from the space around it, not all of the matter disappears forever beyond the event horizon, falling into a singularity where it can never escape to reach observational instruments.
But some of the matter involved in this monster's meal gets diverted, traveling along the magnetic field lines outside the black hole to the black hole's poles, where it is launched into space as jets of plasma.
Two of the plasma jets are extending above and below the galactic plane, a normal occurrence, suggesting that the black hole's equatorial plane also coincides with the galactic equatorial plane.
But the remaining two plasma jets hit the galactic disc, which calculations suggest is evidence that the monster black hole was somehow tipped onto its side.
The team confirmed this using other observatories around the world, including ALMA, the Expanded Very Large Array, and Apache Point.
"Like seeing a crime scene in different lighting, stitching all the images together shows how much NGC 5084 has changed in its recent past," said Dr Borlaff.
At the center of the galaxy, the researchers also found a dusty streak, characteristic of a disk of material swirling around the equatorial region of a supermassive black hole, when viewed parallel to the plane of the galaxy.
This shows that the black hole plane is perpendicular to the galactic plane!
This hints at an interesting event in the galaxy's past, creating a flow of material into the galactic center.
According to the article published in The Astrophysical Journal, the most likely scenario is a powerful galactic collision, resulting in two galaxies merging and their black holes as well.
Ironically, the fusion went horribly wrong and created a tilted monster.
Calculations show that the original black hole was incredibly massive – 45.7 million times the mass of the Sun, or more than 11 times the monster black hole at the center of the Milky Way – so whatever could tip it over would have to be pretty terrifying.
Scientists hope to find similar examples to learn more about the history of galaxies, which is perhaps much more violent than we imagine.
