Traditional cakes of Quang Nam such as Banh To, Banh Thuan, Banh In, Banh Da, Hat Sen, Banh Chung, Banh Tet… are indispensable in every traditional Tet holiday. Near Tet, traditional Tet cake production facilities in Dai Phong, Dai Cuong (Dai Loc) or in Duy Xuyen district… light up from early morning until late at night to serve people on Tet holiday, or buy as gifts.
From December 20 to December 29 of the lunar calendar, the bakery of Mr. Vo Hong Khanh's family (66 years old, residing in My Dong village, Dai Phong commune) is constantly "on fire" day and night to bring cakes to market. Mr. Khanh's family bakery produces more than 300 cakes per day. To deliver on time, all members of his family start working from 4 am until late at night.
“My family sells a banh to at a wholesale price of 22,000 VND, many people buy in bulk and then retail at prices ranging from 25,000 - 30,000 VND/piece. During a banh to Tet season, my family makes a net profit of tens of millions of VND. Although the income is not much compared to the effort, I feel happy to keep the profession of my ancestors,” said Mr. Khanh.
In the days before Tet, Ms. Nguyet (38 years old, My Phuoc village, Dai Phong commune) makes hundreds of kilos of banh thuan to meet market demand, with a selling price of 80,000 VND/kg. "Banh thuan is made from chicken eggs, flour, sugar and ginger, so it is very soft, spongy, and when eaten, the ingredients blend together to create a sweet, delicious taste. I just try to work one more day to turn off the oven to clean up and prepare for Tet" - Ms. Nguyet shared.
The banh tet oven of Mrs. Le Thi Chin's family (55 years old) in My Hao village (Dai Phong commune) cooks and sells mainly to small traders at Gia Coc market (Dai Minh), Phuong Dong market (Dai Phong)... and wholesalers in Da Nang. The banh tet establishment of "Miss Ba Dai Loc" - Nguyen Hoang Linh (Dai An commune, Dai Loc) is also bustling until the last days of the year with batches of cakes, jams, dried foods of all kinds, and braised sausages to supply for Tet.
Until the afternoon of December 27, the bakery of Mrs. Le Thi Minh Hoa (born in 1965) and Mr. Le Ga (born in 1961, residing in Dai Cuong commune, Dai Loc) was bustling with people coming and going. In addition to banh it, banh xu xue, banh chung, banh tet, Mrs. Hoa's establishment also has banh to. Every day, hundreds of banh to loaves and many banh chung loaves (banh chung with mung bean filling, meat filling) are produced with prices ranging from 35,000 to 60,000 VND each. Mrs. Hoa's establishment packages more than 100 kg of sticky rice and banh tet each day, with each banh tet loaves selling for 35,000 to 120,000 VND.
Ms. Hoa shared: "In the past few days, the demand for banh chung, banh tet, and banh to has increased, orders are continuous but we do not dare to accept more because we do not have enough capacity to make them" - Ms. Hoa said.
The Tet atmosphere is knocking on the door at the traditional An Lac rice cake village (Duy Thanh commune, Duy Xuyen). This year, Ms. Vo Thi Hoi's family (Duy Thanh commune) produced about 2 tons of various cakes, the most prominent of which is green bean rice cake. Ms. Hoi's facility produces day and night, mobilizing 3 workers to work but still does not have enough goods to deliver.
An Lac village has dozens of traditional cake production facilities. Many facilities have invested in purchasing machinery and equipment, expanding production scale, and have more attractive and beautiful designs than before, meeting customers' tastes. Not only good quality and beautiful appearance, An Lac printed cakes are also suitable for people's budgets, so the cake village always attracts customers.
Lunar New Year 2025 is about to knock on every door. In every family in Quang Nam, the aroma of Tet cakes can be heard...
