Türkiye with ambitious calculations

VTC NewsVTC News12/07/2023

According to analysts, the goal of these calculated adjustments by Ankara is to increase its influence to maintain and expand its core interests in the region as well as around the world.

One of the most notable new moves Ankara has made regarding its core foreign policy is its decision to change its stance on accepting Sweden into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

Accordingly, at the NATO summit on July 10 in Lithuania, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan reversed Ankara's opposition to Sweden's admission to NATO that it has maintained for the past decade and a half, by deciding to conditionally support NATO's 32nd member. Analysts say President Erdogan's move is greatly motivated by the US administration's recent active stance in supporting the transfer of F-16 fighters to Turkey.

In parallel with this move, Türkiye has also actively promoted the maintenance and implementation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative, which it and the United Nations (UN) mediated in July 2022. At a meeting with British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on the sidelines of the NATO Summit on July 11, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan agreed with the British leader that the Black Sea grain agreement should be continued to be extended and implemented. This was also a point of view that President Erdogan especially emphasized during his talks with Ukrainian President Zelensky on July 8.

In the region, Türkiye and Egypt on July 3 upgraded their diplomatic relations to the Ambassadorial level after many years of interruption due to the coup that overthrew Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in Egypt in the summer of 2013. This is also considered a major step forward in foreign affairs by President Erdogan, helping to raise Ankara's position and being consistent with the positive changes in the reconciliation trend that has been taking place strongly in the Middle East in recent times...

In the economic field, Türkiye is promoting many diverse cooperation activities with major economies, including China - the world's second largest economy. On July 11, the first large-scale Business Conference between Turkey and China was held in Istanbul with the participation of more than 100 large enterprises, focusing on discussing many aspects of ambitious cooperation between the two sides, especially in the fields of energy, trade, etc.

Strengthening cooperation with economic powers is considered Ankara's strategic direction in its efforts to revive the domestic economy, which has been severely affected by prolonged inflation as well as the catastrophic earthquake last February.

Commenting on Aljazeera Arabic television on July 12, many European and Middle Eastern analysts shared the view that Türkiye is trying to adjust its foreign policy to maintain and expand its core interests in the region as well as around the world. Ankara is making truly ambitious calculations. However, in the current complex global geopolitical context, Ankara's ability to achieve its goals still needs more time to be verified and authenticated.
