Pork prices hit record high
Pig prices continued to increase sharply, reaching VND81,000-82,000/kg in Dong Nai. This is the highest level since the historical peak of VND100,000/kg in May 2020.
At traditional markets in Hanoi, pork prices increased by 10,000-15,000 VND/kg. Specifically, pork belly ranges from 145,000-150,000 VND/kg; pork ribs from 140,000-190,000 VND/kg; shoulder, ham, rump meat 145,000 VND/kg; lean pork is commonly sold at 190,000-250,000 VND/kg.
Cheap strawberries flood the market
Strawberries are in harvest season in Son La, widely sold at prices ranging from 60,000-200,000 VND/kg depending on the type. However, imported strawberries from China are also appearing on the market at a cheaper price, around 50,000 VND/kg.
Some traders import poor quality strawberries and label them as 'Son La strawberries', 'Moc Chau strawberries' or 'Da Lat strawberries' to sell to consumers.
Sweet bamboo shoots of the Northwest - From a rustic dish to an expensive specialty
Recently, sweet bamboo shoots – a famous specialty of the Northwest – have suddenly become a craze on social networks. A series of mukbang videos (online eating trends) by TikTokers from North to South have made this dish more prominent than ever. The clips with millions of views have continuously praised the crunchiness, sweetness and unique aroma of bamboo shoots when eaten with cham cheo – a typical Thai spice.
The strong spread on social networks has created an "explosive" effect in demand, turning bamboo shoots from a rustic dish into a sought-after specialty. Currently, on e-commerce platforms and "online markets", bamboo shoots are sold at prices ranging from 60,000-120,000 VND/kg, depending on size and quality. In particular, young, small bamboo shoots are often more expensive because they are considered sweeter, less fibrous and softer when processed.
One notable point is that many businesses give away Cham Cheo dipping sauce when selling bamboo shoots, creating a perfect combo that helps customers experience the original flavor of this dish. This is also a factor that helps increase the value of the product and stimulate consumption demand.
Chayote prices have dropped dramatically, now only 300-500 VND/kg.
In contrast to the rise of bamboo shoots, many other agricultural products are plummeting. According to Thanh Nien newspaper, the current price of chayote is only 300-500 VND/kg, the lowest price in many years. Despite the unprecedented low price, farmers are still having difficulty selling.
In Nghe An, many households growing chayote are facing the risk of heavy losses. Ms. Huong - a farmer here - said that her family has more than 3,000m² of chayote growing. At the beginning of the season, the price of chayote fluctuated from 5,000-7,000 VND/kg, helping to bring in a stable source of income. However, just a week after Tet, the price of chayote dropped sharply and could not be sold. Currently, she has left nearly 2 tons of fruit under the tree because no one is buying.
The problem of unstable agricultural product consumption has caused many farming households to fall into a difficult situation. Products that have been granted OCOP (One Commune One Product) certification cannot avoid the situation of unstable output. Without timely solutions, chayote growers may have to change their farming model or face heavy losses in the upcoming crop.
Carrot prices hit rock bottom, farmers disappointed
Not only chayote, carrots are also in a similar situation. After Tet, the price of carrots dropped sharply and reached a record low. Large carrots are now only 200-300 VND/kg, causing growers to lose motivation to produce.
This situation poses a difficult problem for Vietnam's agricultural sector, as the imbalance between supply and demand leads to unstable agricultural prices, causing heavy losses for growers. Some experts believe that the lack of stable consumption channels and the lack of a mechanism to link farmers and businesses are the main causes of oversupply and falling prices.
Rice export prices increase again
Meanwhile, Vietnam's rice export prices have shown signs of increasing again, bringing hope to farmers and exporters. This price increase could help improve income for rice growers after a long period of stable prices.
