Traffic congestion reduced thanks to 3 new ferries, along with 5 old ferries
On August 28, the Bay View 01 ferry was still being tested after two days of arriving at Dong Bai ferry terminal (Cat Hai district, Hai Phong city).
"The trial run of the Bay View 01 ferry went smoothly, ensuring safety and meeting all conditions to be put into use in the next few days," said a leader of the Hai Phong Waterway Assurance Joint Stock Company.
Three new modern ferries will be put into use to serve tourists and people during the upcoming September 2nd holiday.
Thus, together with the Bay View Cat Ba 03 ferry (number HP 6139) put into operation on July 31; the Bay View Cat Ba 02 ferry put into operation on August 15, the Bay View Cat Ba 01 ferry is about to be put into operation, increasing the capacity to transport passengers from Hai Phong to Cat Ba island on September 2.
Mr. Vu Manh Trung, Head of Dong Bai ferry terminal (Cat Hai district, Hai Phong) said that the 3 new Bay View Cat Ba ferries are 58m long, 15m wide, 2.65m high, and have a capacity of 192.52 tons. The new ferries can carry 9 45-seat cars and 40 motorbikes, many times more than the old ferries.
Cat Ba Bay View Ferry is designed with 3 floors, in which the first floor is where vehicles gather. The new ferry blade is designed by the manufacturer to be longer, can be raised and lowered, helping vehicles get on and off the ferry without wasting time jacking.
The second floor of the ferry has nearly 200 seats, a bar serving people, and is air-conditioned. Two sides of this passenger compartment are fitted with glass doors with a wide view, allowing visitors to enjoy the scenery while the ferry is moving. The ferry has 6 toilets on 2 floors.
"The new ferry is more convenient and modern, but the ticket price remains the same. The new ferry's travel time is still 20-25 minutes/trip, the same as the old ferry," Mr. Trung informed.
It is expected that about 50,000 tourists will come to Cat Ba Island during the upcoming September 2nd holiday.
According to Mr. Trung, since the new ferry was put into operation, the long-term traffic jam has been greatly reduced. It is expected that during the upcoming September 2nd holiday, there will be about 50,000 tourists coming to Cat Ba Island, but with the operation of 3 new ferries along with 8 large ferries and 1 small ferry under the old payroll, the traffic jam will be reduced.
Expanding ferry terminal to increase passenger transport capacity
In the coming time, Bay View Cat Ba 04 and 05 ferries will be handed over. The addition of a total of 5 new ferries with an investment of up to 130 billion VND, the total number of ferries operating at the two Dong Bai - Cai Vieng wharves will be up to 15 large and small vehicles.
However, because the current Dong Bai ferry terminal is designed with one side and a width of about 35 m, it can only accommodate 2 new ferries at the same time. Hai Phong City People's Committee has planned to expand Dong Bai ferry terminal in the near future to accommodate 3 to 4 ferries of all types at the same time.
Dong Bai ferry terminal will be upgraded and expanded by about 15m to accommodate 3 to 4 large ferries to dock at the same time.
In addition, at Dong Bai ferry terminal, the auxiliary works have not been built yet, currently using the temporary waiting room of Mat Troi Company Limited. The current waiting room is about 100m away from the ferry terminal, making it inconvenient for passengers to move from the waiting room to the ferry, so it is also necessary to build auxiliary works and an operating house at Dong Bai terminal.
Regarding the plan to expand Dong Bai ferry terminal, Hai Phong City People's Committee has agreed to the policy of expanding the road to the ferry terminal to a road width of 27m according to the approved detailed planning 1/500. At the same time, the competent authority has been assigned to study the planning scheme to build a waiting room, an operating house and other auxiliary works to serve the operation of the ferry terminal.
Cai Vieng ferry terminal is currently 27m wide and needs to be upgraded and expanded. Hai Phong City strives to complete construction of these items before the 2025 tourist season.
Hai Phong City People's Committee also assigned functional units to study the removal of concrete ledges on both sides of the current ferry wharf to ensure that 3 to 4 ferries can dock safely.
Cai Vieng Wharf in Phu Long Commune, Cat Hai District will be expanded by 11m, the ferry terminal operator building managed by the Hai Phong Department of Transport will be dismantled, and the land of neighboring households will be cleared to expand Provincial Road 356 to the ferry terminal, with a route and road width to ensure convenient traffic.
Dong Bai ferry terminal does not have an operator yet, and is currently borrowing a temporary waiting room from Mat Troi Company Limited for use.
The total investment and upgrading of items from expanding two wharves, building an operator's house, waiting room, installing a wharf station, expanding roads, lighting systems, and dredging two ferry wharves is about more than 100 billion VND.
Hai Phong City People's Committee assigned Cat Hai District People's Committee, Hai Phong Department of Transport, Economic Zone Management Board, Cat Ba Sun Company, Hai Phong Waterway Assurance Joint Stock Company to coordinate implementation and strive to complete in 2024.
