The most recent edition of a similar exercise was conducted in Umroi, Meghalaya state, northeastern India in September 2019.
The Indian Ministry of Defense has deployed 76 soldiers, mainly from the Ladakh Reconnaissance Battalion; while the Royal Thai Army has also sent 76 soldiers, mostly from the 1st Battalion, 14th Infantry Regiment, 4th Division, to participate in the exercise.
Exercise Maitree aims to promote military cooperation between the two countries and enhance their combined capabilities in conducting counter-insurgency/terrorism operations in jungle and urban environments under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter. The exercise focuses on physical training, joint planning and joint tactical exercises.
Tactical exercises will include the establishment of a joint operations center, intelligence and surveillance center, the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and counter-UAV systems, the protection of landing sites, deployment and withdrawal of small groups, special helicopter operations, blockade and search, intervention and destruction of illegal structures.
The exercise allows both sides to share best practices in tactics, techniques and procedures for conducting joint operations, while also facilitating the development of interoperability and friendship between soldiers of the two countries.
Maitree is an annual joint exercise between Thailand and India, involving air and ground forces, along with medical operations.
