The festival aims to review the heroic history and fighting spirit of De Nam, De Tham and the insurgents in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; continue to affirm and honor the cultural and historical values of the Yen The uprising.
At the same time, educating traditions and national pride, strengthening the great national unity bloc, creating more spirit, motivation and strength for today's and future generations.
In his opening speech, Chairman of the People's Committee of Yen The district Than Hai Nam said that the Yen The uprising broke out in 1884, in the context of the French colonial invasion of our country.
With the opening victory at Duc Lan (Phu Binh district, Thai Nguyen province), De Nam (also known as Luong Van Nam) and the patriots returned to The Loc communal house (now Ha communal house, Tan Trung commune, Tan Yen district) to organize the flag-sacrificing ceremony on March 16, 1884, officially launching the armed uprising against the invading French colonialists and their traitorous lackeys.
In March 1892, De Nam was murdered. Hoang Hoa Tham (also known as De Tham), a talented general of the insurgent army, rose up to continue raising the flag of uprising, becoming the supreme leader with the nickname "Yen The Gray Tiger".
Hoang Hoa Tham consolidated and gathered forces to organize the Flag Ceremony at Dong communal house (Bich Dong ward, Viet Yen town today) on December 19, 1892.
From then on, Hoang Hoa Tham officially became the leader and soul of the Yen The uprising. With his outstanding military talent, De Tham relied on the mountains and forests to organize many brave and daring battles, making the French invaders scared and terrified many times.
In 1913, the cloth hero Hoang Hoa Tham was murdered by the French colonialists, and the Yen The uprising went into decline.
The Yen The uprising was assessed by historical researchers as "the largest, most persistent, and most glorious armed uprising of peasants in the history of the nation against French colonialism before the Party existed."
The uprising is a convincing demonstration of the latent power of the peasants, contributing many valuable experiences to the treasure trove of Vietnamese military history, especially the art of guerrilla warfare, people's war, establishing fighting villages, fighting and negotiating at the same time... which were creatively applied in the two resistance wars against French colonialism and American imperialism later.
During the uprising, Hoang Hoa Tham demonstrated the qualities of a military genius, someone that even the French government had to admit "appears only once a century".
With its outstanding values, in 2012, the historical site "Yen The Uprising Sites" was recognized as a special national relic; Yen The Festival was recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage.
