Taiwan's defense ministry said today (May 27) that the Shandong aircraft carrier and two other Chinese ships passed through the Taiwan Strait, the latest development in military tensions in the region, according to Reuters news agency.
According to Taipei, the Shandong sailed north around noon today, passing through the strait close to the median line - which acts as an unofficial boundary between the island of Taiwan and mainland China. Taiwan's defense ministry said it had dispatched ships and aircraft to closely monitor and "respond appropriately" to the Chinese group.

According to Taipei, such activities have been occurring with increased frequency since August last year, when then-Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi visited the island.
