Exercise can cause stroke if you have this disease

In a recent study, scientists from the Kharagpur Institute of Technology (India) said that exercise brings health benefits to almost everyone, but can be dangerous for patients with carotid artery obstruction, according to the Talker news site.

Specifically, a team of Indian scholars found that increased heart rate during exercise can cause stroke in patients with severe carotid artery occlusion. However, for healthy people or patients with only mild arterial occlusion, exercise is beneficial for maintaining optimal blood flow.

Further explaining how patients with severe carotid artery blockages can have a stroke while exercising, the team explained that this is the artery that supplies blood flow to facial and brain tissues, located on both sides of the neck.

When fat, cholesterol, and other particles build up inside the carotid artery wall, they form plaque and narrow the artery. Narrowing is dangerous because it restricts blood flow to the brain, which can lead to a lack of oxygen to the brain and cause a stroke.

In healthy patients, increased heart rate during exercise increases and stabilizes the resistance of blood against the artery wall, reducing the risk of stenosis. However, for patients who already have carotid artery stenosis, it is not beneficial.

"High-intensity exercise has been shown to have dangerous side effects in patients with moderate to severe carotid artery stenosis," said study author Dr. Somnath Roy. "It significantly increases the stress on the stenosis, which can cause the stenosis to rupture."

"The plaque on the artery wall after rupture can flow through the blood to the brain, causing a blockage and causing an ischemic stroke," Dr. Roy added, adding that people with moderate to severe carotid artery blockage should have advice and supervision from a medical professional if they want to exercise.
