According to the South China Morning Post on April 18, an 11-year-old boy living in Suzhou, Jiangsu province, China had to be hospitalized and had surgery after swallowing a 100g gold bar while playing at home.

The family said that the boy, surnamed Qian, began to feel a slight distension in his abdomen after swallowing the gold bar, but showed no other signs of pain or discomfort. Worried about his health, they immediately took him to the Children's Hospital Affiliated to Suzhou University for a check-up.

X-rays showed a high-density metal object stuck in the boy's intestines.

Initially, because there were no signs of danger, doctors chose conservative treatment: prescribing laxatives to help expel the gold bar through the digestive tract.

However, after two days with no progress, the doctor decided to surgically remove it because he feared the gold bar could cause intestinal obstruction or perforation of the digestive tract.

The laparoscopic surgery took 30 minutes and was performed by two doctors. The doctors successfully removed the gold bar despite difficulties due to its large size and smooth surface.

After surgery, the boy recovered quickly, eating normally after just two days and was discharged from the hospital shortly thereafter.

The story immediately caused a stir on Chinese social media. Many users wondered how the boy could swallow such a gold bar. Some commented: “Did the boy think it was a chocolate bar?”, “How could he swallow such a large and hard gold bar? I can’t even swallow pills!”.

However, some others expressed concern about the hyperactivity and lack of supervision of young children, saying that parents need to keep an eye on andeducate their children more carefully.

Incidents of children swallowing foreign objects are not uncommon in China, ranging from coins and batteries to nails and small toys. Previously, a 5-year-old boy in the northwest of the country also swallowed a large padlock out of curiosity, but had to have surgery to remove it nine days later after the pain became severe.
