Microneedling does not treat acne, and if done, can cause acne to flare up more severely and increase the risk of skin infection.
Dr. Tran Nguyen Anh Thu, a specialist in Dermatology - Dermatology, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that micro-needling is a minimally invasive procedure on the skin. The doctor uses a roller with small needles, actively creating tiny holes on the skin's surface. These injuries activate the body's natural wound healing response. The body will release growth stimulants, creating new blood vessels and many proteins (collagen, elastin). These proteins help the skin to be plump, firm and smooth.
Microneedling is commonly used on the face but can also be used on the legs, back, neck, head or areas of aging or damaged skin. This method is indicated for the treatment of pitted scars, shallow scars, especially acne scars; large pores; fine wrinkles; skin rejuvenation; patchy hair loss.
However, microneedling is not used to treat acne that is inflamed. According to Dr. Thu, many people mistakenly believe that microneedling can treat acne due to misunderstandings or inaccurate information from beauty salons or social networks.
Acne contains bacteria, especially pustules, nodules and cysts. When rolling, the needles will come into contact with acne-causing bacteria, spreading the bacteria to healthy skin areas, irritating and causing acne to flare up more and more severely. The procedure creates small wounds that can cause inflammation, infection and acne to flare up more severely.

In addition, other cases that should not be used for microneedling include skin that frequently has rashes (contact dermatitis); is suffering from atopic dermatitis (eczema), psoriasis, herpes; people with blood clotting disorders or are taking anticoagulants; cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation therapy. The treatment area should not be used for moles or tumors that change in size, shape, color, or bleed. Patients should go to a hospital specializing in dermatology or oncology for examination.
Dr. Thu noted that skin treatment with microneedling does not have immediate beautifying effects and requires recovery time. The skin needs several days to several weeks (depending on the depth of the needle in the skin) to see results. Patients need to carefully select the information introduced and verify it before applying and should go to a specialized dermatology hospital for appropriate diagnosis and treatment.
