(Quang Ngai Newspaper) - "Love of the Countryside 4" is the 4th poetry collection of the Pham Quang Ngai Poetry Club, published by the Writers' Association Publishing House in March 2025. The collection of poems is the crystallization of 62 authors, with 141 poems, not only expressing the soul but also gentle, profound emotional flows about love for the homeland, country, family and memories of the past.
The emotions of love for homeland, country, and family are expressed by the authors mainly through simple, familiar images that easily touch people's hearts. Reading the poems "Soul of the Country" (Pham Dung), "Visiting Quang Ngai" (Pham Dinh Dung), "The Country in Spring" (Thanh Hai), "Missing Home" (Pham Van Kiem)... we will feel that. "Tra Giang's blue waves carry the scent of the streets/ Thien An's green hills are imbued with the taste of the fields/ Truong Luy's prestige shines on the Vietnamese land/ Sa Huynh's culture shines in the Eastern sky" (Quang Ngai - Pham Van Thanh). The author used concrete images to evoke pride in the natural beauty and heroic history of Quang Ngai, a land rich in cultural traditions.
The authors have recorded the feelings about filial piety and gratitude for the merits of ancestors, grandparents, parents... in precious verses, vivid and concise images with high expressive ability such as the poems: "Brief history of the first ancestor Pham Tu" (Pham Thao), "The legend has gone far" (Huong Dai), "Mother's hair" (Tran Thu Ha), "The word filial piety" (Hoang Diem), "Memories of mother" (Pham Viet Tri)... "The history of Vietnam will remain forever/ The mirror of Do Ho - the first ancestor Pham Tu/ The one who had the merit of driving out the enemy/ Helping Tien Ly establish Van Xuan independence" (Brief history of the first ancestor Pham Tu - Pham Thao). The above verses have a strong affirmation, imbued with the spirit of national pride, expressing the honor for the merits of Pham Tu - the ancestor of the Pham family. Or "The late autumn sky is pale with mist/ The sunset is slow, the day gradually fades/ Only a handful of earth separates the yin and yang/ A legendary MAN has gone far away..." (The Legend Has Gone Far - Huong Dai). With the technique of describing the scene to imply the feeling, the author not only expresses his immense regret but also honors the stature of a "legendary General" of the Vietnamese people: Vo Nguyen Giap. And: "My whole life is full of doubts/ So my mother's hair gradually gets shorter/ This morning, what do I think/ In each strand of gray hair because of us?" (Mother's Hair - Tran Thu Ha). The rhetorical question in the stanza not only expresses deep gratitude towards the mother but also is a contemplation, containing deep feelings, making the reader unable to help but be moved when thinking about the birth and upbringing of parents.
Besides love for the homeland and gratitude, the poetry collection “Love of the Country 4” also expresses deep nostalgia and concerns about time. Author Nguyen Hong Anh uses the image of “full moon” to express his feelings about April - a period of time with special meaning, which can recall memories in life. “I come back to pick up the full moon/ Reflecting in the memories of the years, full and empty/ Heaven and earth, all things, grass and trees/ Oh April, there is still a feeling...!” (April's Feelings - Nguyen Hong Anh). Author Hoang Than evokes in the reader's heart feelings about the flow of life through slow-paced six-eight verses like a regretful confession: “The season comes/ the season passes quickly/ The river and water/ before and after are still the same” (Owe a hug - Hoang Than).
Author Pham Thanh Luong, with his subtle metaphors, painted a picture of a sweet love, full of longing and nostalgia. “Pick up for me the color of sunlight/ Send it in the scent of green hair/ Hold on to the kiss at the bottom of my eyes/ Spring is passionately longing” (Sending spring in the sun - Pham Thanh Luong). Author Nguyen Mau Cong used many beautiful, symbolic images, both realistic and romantic, to express a soul passionate about memories of love. “Spreading out my arms to count the soft raindrops/ Falling drops, broken shadows shine to find someone’s figure/ You come back and leave footprints/ I come back and diligently look at the reflection of the poem!” (July afternoon rain - Nguyen Mau Cong). Pham Nhat Linh, with his poetic images and lyrical tone, portrayed the beautiful sadness of the artist. “The echoes still have a bit of ashes/ Bury deep memories of the appointment in the next life/ ... Please be a street singer/ A bit of artistic charm to warm the heart of the old wharf” (Noi longing - Pham Nhat Linh). Even though love has turned to ashes, the author still chooses to preserve it through art, through songs that wander through life. That is what makes sadness no longer tragic, but becomes a calm and meaningful beauty. Author Da Mien, with the personification technique, depicts a gentle but profound sadness about separation and loss in innocent but fragile student love: "The scent of lotus plays with the wind/ Soft grass sleeps soundly/ No longer waiting for you/ After school, I am absent-minded" (Ly khuc - Da Mien).
