Speaking to Sputnik about the improved T-80BVM tanks being used in the Special Operations, an officer with the codename "Thursday" of the 1st Guards Tank Army said that the T-80BVM is like a "flying tank" and has proven its capabilities on the battlefield.
“We have been in the campaign in Ukraine for about four months. Our tank is the latest improved T-80BVM, it is worthy of being called a marksman tank. Simply put, the T-80BVM allows us to fire a bullet through a window at a distance of up to 5 km,” said the Thursday officer.
According to Russian tank crews, the T-80BVM allows them to fire a bullet that hits a target through a window at a distance of up to 5 km.
Another tanker with the code name "Cap" said, T-80BVM is called by us as "flying tank" and it has proven its ability to operate well in battles in special military operation zones.
“This is a great vehicle, very fast thanks to the 1,250 horsepower gas turbine engine system. This is also the only Russian tank model using this type of engine design," Cap said.
Also according to Russian tank soldiers, the T-80BVM is integrated with the most modern technology with an advanced ballistic calculation system, all that remains is to determine the position and fire. No one can escape it.
The T-80BVM version was upgraded at Omsktransmash (a subsidiary of UVZ Corporation) through a deep modernization of the T-80BV version that was put into service in the Soviet Union in 1985. The modified version was presented to the public in 2017 and entered service with the Russian army in 2019.
In terms of overall design, the T-80BVM after being improved has significantly increased firepower, protection and mobility compared to its predecessor tank.
The T-80BVM is equipped with improved Relikt explosive reactive armor equivalent to that of the T-90 tanks, providing protection against tandem warheads and reducing the penetration of APFSDS rounds by more than 50%.
The T-80BVM version is equipped with additional turret protection and UAV suppression equipment.
The vehicle has a combat weight of 46 tons; overall length of 9.56m; width of 3.38mm and height of 2.22m. The T-80BVM uses a GTD-1250TF gas turbine engine with a capacity of 1,250 horsepower, allowing it to move at a maximum speed of 80km/h with an operating range of 500km. The vehicle's combat crew consists of 3 people, including the vehicle commander, driver and gunner.
The main firepower equipped for the T-80BVM is the 125mm 2A46M-4 smoothbore gun, with 15-20% increased accuracy compared to the previous version, an effective range of 2-3km, and armor penetration of about 590-630mm at a distance of 2,000m.
The T-80BVM can carry 45 rounds of ammunition and missiles for the main gun with an automatic loading system. If the system fails during the process, soldiers can switch to manual loading.
The tank can also launch the 9M119 Refleks anti-tank missile using Tandem warhead technology. The missile is semi-automatic laser-guided and has a reported hit probability of 80% at 4,000m and 70% at 5,000m. With a rate of fire of 6-8 rounds/minute and a range of 4-5km, the missile is fully capable of attacking low-flying helicopters.
