Russia is beefing up its ballistic arsenal with new strategic missile systems, a senior military commander said on December 17, and plans to launch missiles with maximum range and possibly step up testing to counter current geopolitical tensions, Reuters reported.

Sergei Karakayev, commander of Russia's Strategic Missile Forces, said the country plans to test the new systems at maximum range.
“In terms of range, there is no place our missiles cannot reach ,” Commander Sergei Karakayev was quoted by Russia’s state news agency RIA as saying. Karakayev also said that Russia could increase the intensity of testing advanced missile weapons if tensions continue to rise.
Confirming publicly for the first time that Russia is developing a new intercontinental ballistic missile system called Osina, Sergei Karakayev said that putting the weapon into combat and a number of new missile systems is a top priority.
At the same time, Russia is also completing the development of missile systems similar to the new Oreshnik medium-range hypersonic ballistic missile that President Vladimir Putin said on December 16 that Russia would soon mass produce.
Along with that, Russia's new state weapons development program will consider various options for developing strategic offensive weapons.
Sergei Karakayev said that Russia's armament program ensures that the strategic missile forces are equipped with mobile missile systems. Divisions equipped with mobile missile systems will be the means to inflict heavy damage on the enemy during an attack.
