New developments in the Russia conflict

Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên07/02/2025

On February 6, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense announced that it had received its first batch of Mirage 2000 fighter jets from France, as well as F-16 fighter jets (manufactured in the US) from the Netherlands.

"These modern fighter jets have arrived in Ukraine and will soon begin carrying out combat missions, bolstering defenses and enhancing the ability to effectively counter Russian attacks," Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov emphasized. The Mirage 2000 is the latest sophisticated fighter jet Ukraine has received from its allies, following the first F-16s it received last summer, according to Reuters.

What capabilities does the French Mirage 2000 multirole fighter jet add to Ukraine's military?

The Dutch Ministry of Defence stated that for security reasons, they would not disclose the number or timing of F-16 deliveries to Ukraine. The Netherlands had previously promised to deliver a total of 24 F-16s to Ukraine, in addition to those provided to a Ukrainian pilot training center in Romania. French officials also cited security reasons for refusing to specify the number of Mirage 2000 aircraft delivered to Ukraine, although they revealed that these fighter jets had been modified for air-to-ground attacks. According to a French parliamentary report from late last year, six of the 26 Mirage 2000s belonging to the French Air Force would be transferred to Ukraine.

Ukraine is being supplied with additional fighter jets amid a conflict with Russia that has lasted nearly three years with no signs of abating. Yesterday, TASS news agency quoted Russian Deputy Chief of General Staff Vasily Trushin as saying that Russian forces are attacking in almost every area of the Russian military operation in Ukraine thanks to adjustments in combat tactics. On the other hand, the Russian Ministry of Defense accused Ukrainian forces of conducting eight attacks near the villages of Ulanok and Cherkasskaya Konopelka in Russia's Kursk province on February 6, according to Reuters.

Also on February 6th, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Russia would not accept a "temporary ceasefire" as a solution to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, according to RT. Zakharova argued that a temporary halt to fighting would only allow Ukraine to rearm and prepare for a renewed conflict, and "would be exploited by the West to strengthen the military capabilities of the Kyiv regime." She emphasized that Russia "needs reliable, legally binding agreements and mechanisms to ensure that the conflict does not recur."
