At the 25th anniversary of The Fountainhead , Ayn Rand confided: “Was The Fountainhead written to present my philosophical views? I would like to answer: My motive and purpose in writing is to portray the image of the ideal human being. My ultimate goal is to portray the ideal moral person, all philosophical, educational or cognitive values in the novel are just means to that end.”
The book consists of 4 separate parts corresponding to the names of the characters as well as 4 representatives for 4 groups of people in the society that the author mentioned. Throughout the story from beginning to end is Howard Roark - an architect full of personality, expelled from school for not following the old architectural style, considered crazy for pursuing modern, optimal architecture that the entire American architectural industry should aim for. He understands social tastes but he understands that he is an independent individual, unable to follow the bland tastes of the market. He is a reckless architect in both thought and action. Discarding the classical architectural trend that the public is pursuing to easily get rich, Howard follows the call of reason to build arrogant works bearing his mark and carrying within them the desires of the owners. He transcends public opinion, regardless of what people think of him, because he knows he can live and shine without the existence of others; I don't need someone to define my worth.
After reading The Fountainhead , you will understand why there are millions of people in this world pursuing an artistic career, but only a few are successful.
