Implementing solutions to develop transportation methods in major cities, including buses, Can Tho city sets a goal of making efforts to cover the bus network on most major roads connecting from urban to rural areas, residential areas, industrial parks, connecting neighboring provinces and cities with 34 bus routes by 2025.
Can Tho city bus network is constantly expanding.
Promote development
Compared to big cities, public passenger transport (PTT) appeared in Can Tho city quite early since the 1990s. After a long period of operation, buses gradually became indifferent to people due to deterioration.
According to the assessment of the functional sector, in the period 2010-2015, public passenger transport by bus in Can Tho city continuously decreased in terms of transport volume and means of operation. The rate of people using buses at this time was less than 1% of the city's population.
To specify Decision 13 of the Prime Minister on mechanisms and policies to encourage the development of public transport by bus; Resolution 12 of the Prime Minister on strengthening traffic safety and order and preventing traffic congestion in the period 2019 - 2021.
The Department of Transport has advised the City People's Committee to issue a plan to develop a public passenger transport network by bus in Can Tho city until 2020, with a vision to 2030.
In particular, the focus is on promoting the development of public transport by bus to increase the proportion of public transport by bus to 5% ÷ 10% by 2020 and 20-30% by 2030.
Along with that, buses are an essential choice to ensure the travel needs of people in urban areas to limit personal motor vehicles, reduce congestion, traffic accidents and protect the urban environment.
Increasing the proportion of bus transportation by 5-10% is the goal Can Tho is aiming for.
Constantly expanding
Mr. Pham Van Dong, Deputy Director of the Department of Transport of Can Tho City, said that to realize the above planning, in September 2020, the Can Tho Public Passenger Transport Management and Operation Center (now the Urban Transport Management and Operation Center (under the Department of Transport of Can Tho City) advised the Department to invite investors to participate in the operation of 7 intra-provincial bus routes in the form of no subsidies.
Along with 10 inter-provincial bus routes operating at that time, Can Tho city had 17 bus routes operating. Thus, it basically met the proposed route.
"According to the plan for the period 2020 - 2025, Can Tho city will develop 26 bus routes. Accordingly, the number of new routes expected to open is 9.
Up to now, investors have been selected and put into operation four inner-city bus routes without subsidies, and five adjacent bus routes are being selected for investors to participate in operation, expected to be put into operation in the first quarter of 2025 at the latest," said the Deputy Director of the Department of Transport of Can Tho City.
According to Mr. Pham Van Dong, after 2025, Can Tho plans to develop three more adjacent routes and an intra-provincial route. Thus, the city will develop 34 bus routes, including 16 intra-provincial bus routes and 18 adjacent routes with a total route network length of about 1,222.6 km.
"At this stage, the bus network has basically covered most of the city's main roads, connecting the central urban area and urban areas in neighboring provinces, connecting residential areas and industrial parks, creating a seamless connection in people's choice of daily travel by bus. Thus, at this stage, public transport by bus has become an indispensable choice for the majority of people, civil servants, workers and laborers", the Deputy Director of the Department of Transport of Can Tho City assessed.
