“The market for AI PCs will continue to expand,” AMD President Victor Peng said in an exclusive interview with CNBC, predicting that the number of AI-integrated desktops will increase in the second half of this year.
AI PCs are personal computers embedded with processors specifically designed for AI functionality, such as real-time language translation.
Last December, research firm Canalys said the AI boom is expected to boost PC sales as consumers seek out devices with new technological features, predicting that 60% of PCs shipped in 2027 will have AI capabilities.
HP Chairman and CEO Enrique Lores said that while PC AI will have a real impact on the PC portfolio, it will “take some time” before the technology penetrates deeper into the market.
AI-powered devices may initially be targeted at certain segments of the business PC market, and will expand their applications over time as costs come down, according to research firm IDC.
The game is fiercely competitive
AMD is competing with Nvidia and Intel in the graphics processing unit space — crucial for AI and high-performance computing.
Nvidia currently dominates the GPU market used in AI applications. The most prominent AI models, like OpenAI's ChatGPT, run on Nvidia GPUs like the H100 in the cloud.
Nvidia announced a new GPU for running synthetic AI applications on PCs in early 2024. It will also supply GPUs to laptops from companies like Acer, Dell, and Lenovo.
Intel previously launched its Core Ultra chips in December to run AI programs faster. The company said the processors will power more than 230 of the world's first AI PCs from companies including Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, and Lenovo.
AMD also launched the new MI300X Instinct chip – a graphics processor designed for training large language models – that will compete with Nvidia's H100 chip.
