On November 26, in Thai Binh, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development coordinated with the People's Committee of Thai Binh province to organize a conference to review crop production in 2024 and deploy the production plan for 2025 in the northern provinces.
According to the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), in 2024, unfavorable weather and climate conditions greatly affected agricultural production.
Severe cold spells, severe cold spells, and widespread thunderstorms occurred consecutively. In particular, due to the impact of storm No. 3 (Yagi), the Northern region experienced heavy to very heavy rain, with many places experiencing rainfall exceeding historical levels, greatly affecting the growth and development of crops.
Rice production in the northern provinces reached only over 12.7 million tons, down 288 thousand tons compared to the plan, down 355 thousand tons compared to 2023; productivity was about 3.5 quintals/ha lower than the national average, output accounting for 29.5% of the country.
However, thanks to early initiative in production planning, with the motto of using the winter crop to compensate for the summer crop, many crop areas still ensure growth value.
Of which, corn area reached about 585,000 hectares, an increase of 8,000 tons over the same period, with an estimated output of about 2.7 million tons; vegetable area reached 478,000 hectares, an increase of 6,000 hectares, with an output of more than 8.36 million tons; soybean area reached 31,000 hectares, with an output of 50,000 tons.
In 2025, the northern provinces aim to produce about 2.2 million hectares of rice, with a yield of about 58.8 quintals/ha and an output of nearly 13 million tons; corn area of about 601,000 hectares, with an estimated output of 2.79 million tons; vegetable area of 483,000 hectares, with an output of 8.52 million tons; soybean area of 35,000 hectares, with an output of 58,000 tons.
Speaking at the conference, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Hoang Trung highly appreciated the production efforts of the northern provinces in the face of unfavorable weather conditions and developments of pests and diseases.
To achieve the crop production target in 2025, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development requested localities to strictly follow production plans, especially regarding variety structure, crop calendar, and promote winter crop care to compensate for the damage caused by storm No. 3.
Along with that, it is necessary to closely monitor and ensure adequate water supply for production; strengthen management, inspection and supervision of growing area codes; strengthen forecasting and prediction, especially the development of pests and diseases that are often present and pose a great risk of causing harm.
In addition, localities need to closely follow the tasks and focus on implementing Decree No. 112/2024/ND-CP dated September 11, 2024 of the Government detailing regulations on rice-growing land.
Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Thai Binh province Pham Van Nghiem said that the total rice area of the province in 2024 will reach over 150,000 hectares (ranked 2nd in the Red River Delta in terms of area), the average rice yield will reach 65.2 quintals/ha, ranking first in the Red River Delta, the average output will reach 1 million tons/year. In 2024, the value of products obtained per hectare of cultivated land will reach nearly 200 million VND.
According to the Thai Binh Provincial Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050 approved by the Prime Minister, Thai Binh province identifies agriculture as an important pillar in economic development, contributing to ensuring national food security, aiming to become the leading agricultural production center in the Red River Delta.
To achieve this goal, Thai Binh province will focus on modernizing production, perfecting agricultural production value chains; building concentrated agricultural production areas, applying high technology; focusing on building brands and expanding agricultural product consumption areas; creating industry and regional linkages, promoting sustainable, effective and highly competitive agricultural production development./.
