Creepy nest of more than 100 venomous snakes in suburban Sydney garden

Today (February 7), an Australian snake catching team announced that they had found a nest of 102 venomous snakes in a suburban garden in Sydney, the most populous city in the land of kangaroos.

AFP quoted Mr. Cory Kerewaro as saying that his team received a call reporting the discovery of a venomous snake in a garden in a suburb of Sydney city.

Homeowner David Stein said he shivered when he saw the black snakes in his garden, and quickly called an organization that specializes in handling and relocating reptiles in the Sydney area.

Before arriving, the snake catching team thought they could catch 4-5 adult snakes at most. However, what they discovered was beyond the imagination of even those who specialize in dealing with snakes in urban areas.

According to Mr. Kerewaro, his team pulled "a whole bunch" of snakes from their nests, up to 102 of them.

Initially, the snake catching team found about 40 snakes in the nest, but the snakes kept coming out.

“We found 40 snakes, then the number increased to 70 and then 90,” said Mr. Kerewaro.

In the end, they counted 102 snakes, including 5 adult female snakes and 97 baby snakes.

"Two female snakes gave birth to the baby snakes," AFP quoted Mr. Kerewaro, adding that the remaining female snakes were all pregnant.

The snake found belongs to a venomous species called the red-bellied black snake (scientific name Pseudechis porphyriacus ). With an average length of about 1.25 m in adults, this snake is mostly non-aggressive towards humans, but is ready to attack if provoked.

The venom of this snake is not as toxic as other dangerous snakes in Australia. However, a bite from this individual is still enough to cause severe pain to the victim, making them nauseous and vomiting.

The venom of the red-bellied black snake contains neurotoxins, myotoxins, and coagulants as well as hemolytic (blood-dissolving) properties. Victims of snake poisoning may lose their ability to smell.
