Because it is not yet the full moon of the seventh lunar month (Vu Lan festival), the demand for flowers for offerings such as chrysanthemums, gladiolus, etc. has not increased, so the selling price is relatively stable.
Dalat gardeners will increase flower supply
Speaking to Tuoi Tre Online on August 4, Mr. Ly Phu Qui - director of Dam Sen flower market (District 11, Ho Chi Minh City), said that the amount of flowers coming to the market is relatively stable, in which the types of flowers used a lot in the 7th lunar month such as chrysanthemums, lilies, gladiolus... come to the market on average about 4 trucks/day - equivalent to 250 boxes (each box weighs 50kg); the selling price of these items has increased slightly compared to before with regular chrysanthemums 8,000-10,000 VND/bunch, net chrysanthemums 20,000-25,000 VND/bunch, gladiolus 20,000 VND/bunch, lilies 70,000-100,000 VND/bunch of 5 branches.
According to Mr. Qui, from around the 6th day of the 7th lunar month, the amount of flowers coming to the market will gradually increase due to high demand from people, and will reach its peak on the full moon day.
“Demand is increasing but supply is also expected to increase sharply, especially the supply of chrysanthemums from Lam Dong to Ho Chi Minh City because this year many gardeners prioritize planting to sell at this time. Therefore, the selling price of flowers for this occasion is unlikely to increase too dramatically,” Mr. Qui predicted.
According to a representative of Dam Sen flower market, during the peak season of the 7th lunar month, the amount of chrysanthemums, lilies, and gladiolus entering the market each day can reach about 20-25 trucks (4-5 times more than usual); the selling price can increase from 70-100%. This price increase is equivalent to last year, and is considered not too strong compared to the demand during peak times every year.
Many traders said that about 60-70% of flowers in Ho Chi Minh City are imported from Lam Dong, a few such as white lilies and marigolds are imported from the Southwest region.
“Last year, the price of flowers for the full moon festival increased sharply, so gardeners rushed to plant them to sell during this time. However, if the weather in the South rains heavily during the peak season, it could affect consumption demand as the number of buyers decreases,” Ms. Ngo Huong Thao, a trader at Dam Sen flower market, expressed concern.
Worry about fruit prices "dancing" due to lack of supply
Meanwhile, the prices of some fruits sold at retail markets in Ho Chi Minh City are gradually increasing, such as dragon fruit at 25,000-45,000 VND/kg, grapefruit at 35,000-60,000 VND/kg, watermelon at 15,000-20,000 VND/kg, mango at 35,000-75,000 VND/kg depending on the type...

According to many gardeners, due to the end of the season or the off-season, the supply of many types of fruit is decreasing, while demand is gradually increasing as the seventh lunar month approaches, pushing up the prices of some types.
According to Mr. Le Minh Sang, Director of Tan My Fruit Cooperative (Binh Duong Province), the current price of grapefruit sold at the garden is stable at 27,000-29,000 VND/kg (bulk sale); the price sold to supermarkets is 40,000 VND/kg (selected goods). The above price is 3,000-4,000 VND lower than last month but higher than the same period last year.
Mr. Sang said that although grapefruit fruit is available all year round, the supply of grapefruit is currently at its low point, so there is a possibility that there will not be enough output to meet the demand in July. Therefore, if there is a shortage, the price of grapefruit on the market is likely to increase sharply during this time.
Meanwhile, speaking to Tuoi Tre Online , Mr. Nguyen The Bao, director of Suoi Lon Mango Cooperative (Dong Nai province), said that depending on the variety and region, the main mango season lasts from December to May. Therefore, the current mango supply is quite low, and prices are high.
According to many traders, in the 7th lunar month, the demand for fruit increases sharply to serve the worshiping ceremonies, but at this time the supply mainly revolves around a few types of fruit that produce fruit all year round such as grapefruit, watermelon, dragon fruit... Therefore, if the demand is concentrated on these types, supply will be short of demand, and the selling price will be high.
