Mr Lopez Obrador called it a "historic day", according to AFP. He stressed: "We need justice for all, so that there is no corruption in the judiciary, so that judges apply the principle that there is nothing but the law and no one is above the law."

But the new judicial reforms have caused diplomatic tensions with Mexico's two major trading partners, the United States and Canada, upset investors and sparked protests. Opponents say the reforms undermine democratic checks and balances.
Before the judicial reform bill passed the Mexican Senate on September 10, Margaret Satterthwaite, the UN special rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, asserted that the election of all judges “does not exist in any other country.” She said that without strong safeguards to prevent the infiltration of organized crime into the judicial selection process, the electoral system could become vulnerable to such forces.
