US President Donald Trump stressed that trade tensions with Mexico and Canada will become a driving force for the 2026 World Cup, which will be hosted by three North American countries.

On March 7, Mr. Trump held a press conference in the Oval Office at the White House next to FIFA President Gianni Infantino. Reporters raised the question of whether the current tensions between the US, Canada and Mexico over trade would affect the 2026 World Cup, AFP reported.

“Tension is a good thing. I think it makes things more interesting,” Mr. Trump said. The US president also signed an executive order to establish a task force related to the 2026 World Cup, headed by Mr. Trump himself. The group will help with planning for the tournament, which Mr. Trump described as “the greatest sporting event in history.”

The 2026 World Cup will take place next summer in North America. Currently, there are conflicts between the three co-host countries, the US, Canada and Mexico, after Mr. Trump imposed tariffs on Mexico and Canada. The two neighboring countries also announced that they would take countermeasures.

Also speaking at a press conference on March 7, FIFA President Infantino said that the 2026 World Cup and the Club World Cup held in the US this summer are estimated to attract 10 million visitors, create 200,000 jobs and bring in $40 billion in revenue for the US. “Moreover, we will bring joy and happiness to the whole world and this is certainly priceless,” NBC News quoted Mr. Infantino as saying.

Meanwhile, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem was asked about the security capabilities of a large-scale event like the World Cup, especially after the chaos at the Copa America final in Florida last year. Ms. Noem said she would run “incident command centers” in host cities and work with federal agencies, local law enforcement and international partners to ensure the tournament runs smoothly.
