On the morning of April 2, Qualcomm announced on its official website that it has acquired part of VinAI. This is the next step in the US company's plan to expand its artificial intelligence capabilities. The value of the deal was not disclosed. Dr. Bui Hai Hung, founder and CEO of VinAI, will also join Qualcomm.
In the announcement, the American chip company said it had acquired MovianAI Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research and Application Joint Stock Company, formerly the generative AI division of VinAI, part of the Vingroup ecosystem. On the Vietnamese side, in the announcement sent out, they said they had sold 65% of MovianAI's capital. In 2024, Vingroup will split VinAI into two legal entities, including MovianAI. They own 65% of the capital in the newly established enterprise.
“This acquisition underscores our commitment to dedicating the necessary resources to R&D, making the company a driving force for the next wave of AI innovation. By attracting highly skilled talent from VinAI, the group strengthens its capabilities, benefiting multiple industries and users,” said Jilei Hou, senior vice president of engineering at Qualcomm.
The chip company also highlighted the role of Mr. Bui Hai Hung, introducing the leader of VinAI as a former expert at Google DeepMind, possessing high expertise in the field. Qualcomm called Mr. Hung a person capable of "world-class research, pushing the boundaries of feasibility of AI models".
“We are ready to contribute to Qualcomm's mission of creating breakthroughs in fundamental AI research and expanding them across industries, including smartphones, PCs, software-driven cars... Our team's expertise in generative AI and machine learning will help accelerate the development of innovative solutions that can change the way we live and work," said Dr. Bui Hai Hung.
This is the next acquisition involving Vingroup’s AI subsidiary. Previously, Nvidia acquired VinBrain, a company in the field of artificial intelligence applied in the medical field. The deal was announced when CEO Jensen Huang visited Vietnam in late 2024.
Qualcomm is a leading American chip company. They are famous for their Snapdragon SoC line, which appears in flagship Android phones. In 2024, the company expanded into the computer field with the Snapdragon X chip.
