Under the light spring rain, 9 female knights in flowing green costumes wield 18 types of weapons as gracefully as drifting clouds and flowing water. These images come from the first online debut of the Emei Female Kung Fu Group - the short video "Emei Martial Arts".

Emei martial arts have a long history, originating from the Spring and Autumn Period (770 BC - 476 BC), with a tradition of about 3,000 years. The Emei sect is located in Mount Emei, Sichuan Province, southwest China, famous for its mostly female disciples, and was once described in Jin Yong's martial arts novels. The biggest characteristic of Emei martial arts is the combination of hard and soft, fast and slow. This comes from the terrain of the plains and hills of the Ba Shu region, creating moves that are both majestic and powerful, yet flexible and skillful. Moreover, many large migrations in Sichuan's history have caused "the world's martial arts to converge in Emei", helping this sect absorb the essence of many different martial arts.
Until last year, the Emei female kung fu group “Hua Tian Gu” was established on April 29, 2024 at the 4th Emei Martial Arts Inheritance Conference. The group “Hua Tian Gu” was initiated by Sanrenhang Film Company, in cooperation with Guangdong TV, Yitong Production Company and Sichuan Provincial Martial Arts Association, when they issued a notice to recruit members across China on February 12, 2024.

Ly Khiet Du, Deputy General Director of Tam Nhan Hanh, said about the group "Hoa Thien Cot": "When mentioning Nga Mi, perhaps the first thing that comes to mind is Nga Mi sect in The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber. So why not create a martial arts world of Kim Dung?".
Establishing the “Emei Women’s Kung Fu Troupe” has been a long-held wish of Ling Yun and her master, Mr. Ren Gang, Executive Chairman of the Sichuan Martial Arts Association. “To bring Emei martial arts to a larger stage, to truly continue the excellent traditional Chinese culture, I alone am not enough. More young people need to participate,” Ren Gang shared.
The team includes the heir to the intangible heritage of Emei martial arts, Ling Yun (born after 1995), and eight martial arts lovers born after 2000, under the guidance of leading experts such as Ren Gang, President of the Sichuan Martial Arts Association, and famous martial arts coaches such as Zhao Shi, Zhou Lin, and martial arts instructor Liu Zhaoming.
Immediately after its formation, the group quickly attracted attention with its impressive performances. On May 1, 2024, they performed two performances at the Golden Peak of Emei Mountain, followed by one at Baoguo Temple the following day, showcasing the unique appeal of Emei martial arts.
In June of the same year, the group “Hua Thien Cot” participated in the CCTV Duanwu Festival special program. After that, the Emei female kung fu group also participated in other events.
Ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the "Hoa Thien Cot" group brought Nga Mi martial arts to the Louvre, Arc de Triomphe, Eiffel Tower, and released a special video combining martial arts with Olympic sports that excited many people.

Promoting Emei martial arts in modern times
Tam Nhan Hanh Company and the team considered and discussed for more than a year, and finally decided to establish the group based on three reasons. First, the image of female disciples of the Emei sect has been deeply ingrained in the public mind, and many tourists even perceive Emei through characters such as Guo Xiang and Zhou Zhiruo in Jin Yong's novels. Second, taking Shaolin and Wudang as examples, traditional martial arts were previously mainly associated with the image of men, while the Emei female troupe chose a different path. Third, in the past two years, the image of women who are "both beautiful and strong" has become increasingly prominent, becoming a trend of the times, bringing great confidence to the team.
With the guidance of senior sister Lang Van - ambassador for promoting Sichuan intangible cultural heritage, and a team of highly accomplished coaches, the "Hoa Thien Cot" group not only preserves and promotes traditional martial arts but also brings it closer to the public through eye-catching performances.
“Our goal is to go beyond the traditional idol group image and inspire young people to embrace traditional Chinese culture through our efforts and influence,” said Ling Yun, the group’s co-founder.
With 22 years of martial arts experience, Ling Yun is determined to promote Chinese culture and empower women in martial arts. “Martial arts is not a male-dominated field. We will prove that women are also excellent and encourage them to participate,” she said.
Because she comes from Nga Mi, Lang Van is affectionately called "the modern Zhou Zhiruo" by fans - one of the classic female images in Jin Yong's martial arts novels.
In terms of appearance, the Emei female kung fu group chose green as their symbol, combining tradition and modernity, both convenient and airy. Ling Yun explained: “Green is life, like Mount Emei, like us.” Ling Wen searched for members on social networks and sports schools.
Group member Zhang Jingxuan, who has studied Tai Chi since she was young, said that when she received the invitation message from senior sister Ling Yun, she initially thought it was a "fraudulent group". After a deeper conversation and feeling interested, she overcame her objections and was determined to embark on the path of becoming a "female knight of Nga Mi".
Among the members of the troupe, there are also Jin Yong fans. “When I was young, I loved reading Jin Yong’s novels, especially the Emei Sect in the novels. I never thought that when I grew up, I would be able to make my dream come true,” said Liu Qiao, from Chongqing, who studies martial arts at Chengdu University of Sports.

The Emei female kung fu group has inspired many girls to learn martial arts. |
Regarding martial arts, they practice 5-6 hours/day, practicing Emei Quan, Emei Shi, Tai Chi, archery... The group also has internal exams to evaluate each person's physical condition, technique, and performance.
In terms of visuals, the Emei female kung fu group tried hanging on a rope, adding “flying” movements to the video, increasing the appeal. With the support of steel wires, group members can add “flying” movements in filming, increasing the visual appeal of short videos. Member Ly Noc Phi shared that hanging on a rope is very challenging for the core strength of the body, but thanks to a solid foundation in martial arts, everyone adapted quickly, mastering the technique after only 2 days of practice.
Since its debut in April last year, the “Hua Qiangu” group has attracted more than 23 million views and more than 1 million followers on Douyin. Wang Chao, the inheritor of the national intangible heritage of Emei martial arts, said the group’s videos were “very effective” in promoting Emei to a wider audience. According to Chinese media, many young people fell in love with martial arts and studied Emei martial arts after witnessing Hua Qiangu’s performance.
Kungfu troupe member He Wu Nung was extremely proud: “They not only saw Emei martial arts, but also saw the youthful charm of modern Chinese women promoting traditional culture. In fact, it all stems from our cultural confidence and pride in bringing Chinese culture to the world.”
In recent years, international friends have increasingly come to Mount Emei to experience and learn about the culture and martial arts of this art, and directly feel the unique appeal and power of Chinese martial arts.
