Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino cited Jurgen Klopp's change of heart on transfer fees as an example of the upheaval in football.
"Things can change over time. I heard Klopp say he wouldn't buy players for £100m. But then Liverpool offered that price for Moises Caicedo and he said: 'Oh, I was wrong'. There's nothing different here," Pochettino said on August 24 at a press conference before the match against Luton Town.

Klopp once said he would quit if Liverpool offered more than £100 million ($126 million) for a player. But the German coach appeared to go back on that statement last week when the Anfield club made a $139 million bid for Brighton's Ecuadorian midfielder Moises Caicedo.
Caicedo was also a transfer target for Chelsea, and he eventually chose to join Stamford Bridge for a British football record fee of 144 million USD. On August 20, Caicedo made his Chelsea debut in a 1-3 loss to West Ham.
"In football, things change very quickly, and we need to move forward. Today, nothing changed. But if something happens, we need to adapt," Pochettino added.
The Argentina coach also said he needed to keep an open mind on Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian striker, who is currently training with the Under-21s, expressed his desire to leave after his loan deal with Inter ended last season. While he did not rule out Lukaku returning to Chelsea, Pochettino said the situation was not his responsibility.
Having failed to sign Caicedo, Liverpool have yet to spend more than £100m on any player. But the offer they made to Brighton suggests Klopp's side are ready to break their club transfer record to land a new signing. Liverpool have previously explored the case of Jude Bellingham but were unable to compete with Real. Liverpool's most expensive player is currently Darwin Nunez, the striker who was signed from Benfica in the summer of 2022 for a total fee of $107m, including $84m fixed and $23m in add-ons.
