After expecting “record sales” during the 2023 holiday season, Sony has announced that its PlayStation 5 console has sold more than 50 million units, according to Gaming Bolt . The company reportedly reached that number on December 9, some 161 weeks after the console launched (more than its predecessor, the PlayStation 4, which took 160 weeks), according to The Financial Times.
Additionally, Sony also recorded its most successful Black Friday season ever with the PlayStation 5, and is expected to surpass 25 million units sold this fiscal year.
PlayStation 5 has sold more than 50 million units
“With the strong momentum in November and what’s happening in December, we’re very pleased with overall sales,” said Eric Lempel, senior vice president of global marketing, sales and operations at Sony Interactive Entertainment.
Despite facing many difficulties in supply in the early years, PlayStation 5 has gradually overcome and achieved impressive numbers as it is today, which is a testament to the strong appeal of this game console. In addition, 'blockbusters' such as Marvel's Spider-Man 2 also contributed significantly to sales with 2.5 million copies sold in the first 24 hours of release and surpassing the 6 million mark as of November 12.
In the near future, the future of PlayStation 5 in 2024 is even brighter with big names like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth coming out on February 29 and Rise of the Ronin on March 22.
