Parents in Ho Chi Minh City spend millions for their children to attend summer boarding courses

Since the beginning of May, Ms. Huynh Thi Ha (living in Phu Nhuan, Ho Chi Minh City) has been running around looking for boarding courses for her 3rd grade daughter. Recently, Ms. Ha chose to register her child for a boarding English course in the area, with a fee of 40 million VND/11 weeks.

" If we don't send him to school during the three summer months, no one will take care of him. My grandparents live far away and my husband and I work. If we don't send him to boarding school, no one will take care of him. If we leave him at home, he will watch TV and his phone all day," said Ms. Ha.

Ms. Ha also shared that the center has a discount program of 5-7% if parents pay for the entire course. "The teacher informed that the class for my child's age already has 20 students registered so they will stop accepting more students," Ms. Ha said.

Similarly, for the past 3 weeks, Mr. Le Phong (living in Thu Duc City) has also been "looking with red eyes" for a place that organizes a summer boarding course to send his child.

According to Mr. Phong, his child is in 4th grade this year, and he and his wife do not feel secure if they leave him home alone. Initially, Mr. Phong considered sending his child back to the countryside for his grandparents to take care of. But after thinking it over, because his grandparents are old, he only lets his child visit them for about 2 weeks and then takes him back to the city.

"My husband and I prioritized choosing a center that ensures the safety of our children, good facilities, and quality meals, so we chose a center close to home. The fee is more than 5 million/month," said Mr. Phong.

Understanding the needs of parents with children in preschool and primary school for summer boarding courses, a series of summer courses have opened. Parents just need to go online to search for summer boarding courses for their children, hundreds of suggestions appear with very attractive slogans such as "a vibrant summer for children, peace of mind for parents, beneficial for children's future". Tuition fees for summer boarding courses are up to tens of millions of dong.

“I found the curriculum quite good. The children can study and play in an English environment, with 50% of the teachers being foreigners, ” said Ms. Vo Phuong Linh (living in Tan Binh district).

Ms. Linh registered her child for a boarding English program with a tuition fee of more than 20 million VND/3 summer months at a center in Go Vap district.

“I know that the cost of sending my child to summer boarding school is not small, but during the time my child is off, my husband and I still have to go to work. Sending my child back to the countryside makes me miss him, and it is also hard for my grandparents to look after him for a long time. So since the beginning of May, I have been looking for a place to send my child. My child will study from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from Monday to Friday. However, the center still keeps children until 6 p.m. if parents need it,” said Linh.

As summer vacation approaches, information about many summer boarding courses with the main goal of teaching children English, dancing, singing, playing instruments, drawing... with a fee of 20 - 30 million VND/6-week course, including meals and uniforms, is also being widely advertised by many centers.

Many extracurricular centers in Ho Chi Minh City have even organized summer boarding courses since mid-May to meet parents’ needs for sending their children. Summer tuition and curriculum are designed on a weekly basis, not requiring a full course.

Boarding classes with various contents such as teaching children how to manage emotions, skills such as teamwork, reading comprehension and presentation, problem solving skills... with fees of 3 - 6 million VND/week, depending on the age of the child and the needs of the parents.

In addition to the 3-month full-time boarding classes at skill centers and foreign language centers, there are also many short-term summer boarding courses at the City Children's House and districts with different fees.

Ms. My Hoa (living in Binh Thanh District) said that she has just registered her child to attend a short course at the City Children's House from June 19 to 23 called "training life skills, confidence - courage - shine" with a fee of 1.4 million VND.

"There are many short-term programs for parents to register for. I will try to register for one course to see how my child experiences it and then consider the next course. I am also looking into the "Military Semester" program, but the price is a bit "expensive" so I am considering it further," said Ms. Hoa.

Regarding choosing a summer course for their children, Mr. Ly Duc Thanh, Deputy Director of Fudubank Center (specializing in skills and career guidance for students in Ho Chi Minh City), advised that parents should carefully consider financial issues as well as programs suitable for their children.

When letting children participate in summer classes and programs, parents need to evaluate the reputation of the organization, the safety of the children participating and the value the children receive after the course.
